You are going to think I am nuts....but go to the Norton Support site and get the Norton Removal Software from them and remove the Norton program. The boot the laptop off the Windows Vista disc. Once the windows files load, choose your windows installtion....it will most likely be the only one on the list. Once you choose it, choose repair as the option. Windows will scan your windows installation for errors and repair them if it can by using the files on the cd drive. Once it is done with that, reboot the laptop, take the disc out after it reboots, you don't want to boot off the disc again.
Now, follow the guide below to install some anti-malware and a free anti-virus that does not eat up all your system resources.
Possible Virus and Malware
There is a good chance that you have a virus or malware that is keeping those programs from opening. It does not matter these days what security you have if the door to the web is opened. At the end of this are two links to programs that you should load up and run. The first is MalwareBytes Ant-Malware Tool, the other is Avast Anti-Virus 4.8, install these two and let them perform scans.
Run MalwareBytes first and perform a quick scan, when it finishes, it will ask you to post the results, when it does delete everything it finds.
Run Avast and install it, when it asks, go ahead and schedule a pre-boot scan of your entire system. This should get rid of most problems….

This same issue is happening to me,ive tried the wifi drivers and ive tried taking it to best buy,the best they could do is say they could send it in and i would go without a computer for a month, im trying to update the mouse drivers now and running the windows update,ill post again when i have some more info, also all the help is appriciated,if anyone finds anything else out please post it :)
I had the same problem update the atheros wireless driver. Go to control panel click device manager go under network adapters right click on aforementioned device and select update driver that wil do it good luck
There is a very good chance if you are using a external mouse instead of the touch pad, that is what is causing it. Problem is, I am still looking into why and do not know of a fix yet.
I have the very same laptop and mine worked just fine with a external mouse up until I formated it. Now just like the many other owners, my mouse freezes and and then seconds later the screen goes black. It doesn't however when the external mouse in not pluged in.
I would have to assume this is due to something not being installed right during the windows installation. As I said, mine worked fine until the format. Until I find out what is causing this error to happen, my best advise is not to use a mouse, just use the touch pad.
It's kind of a pain lol, I had gotten so use to the mouse. I kept reaching for it even after I unplugged it. I had to take it off my desk so I would use the touch pad lol.
Okay, I think I have figured out this little problem. Seems to be a issue with HID (Human Interface Device) Mice. Well, atleast in my case. Windows is suppost to ID the plug and play device and then everything works smoothly. For whatever reason, this is not working on this series of laptops. Maybe a bad master install disc was used, maybe just a few hunder units got messed up? Either way, to fix this issue if you are using a external mouse,
Open start menu
Locate "Computer"
Right click "Computer" then select device menu in the window that follows.
Locate " Mice and other pointing devices" and click the "+" to show "Alps pointing device"
Now, you want to take the mouse you want to use and plug it in. After a few seconds you'll hear a sound and a "HID device" will appear in the device manager window under the "Mice and pointing device" tree.
Right click on the HID device. Select update drivers and then "search the internet". Wait until done and everything should be good. Mine hasn't froze and it's been almost an hour. It was every 5-15 minutes.

As for anyone who had this problem and DID NOT, have a external mouse plugged in, try updating your Alps pointing defvice drivers.
Here is some updated info to my work on this problem
"Well, last night I was excited, but it only lasted almost a hour. I
thought I was just a simple, use device manager to to update drivers
for plug and play mouse. Turns out it work, but for only 45 minutes.
Still better the the 5-15 minute limit I had before.
So, that leaves me where I am today. Using Ubuntu, a linux based
desktop OS. I used the Wubi installer and installed it as a like second
OS on my machine. This installation method is removable like a software
app. Amazing there was very little problems. So far today, everything
is working just fine, including the external mouse.
The only thing that I haven't checked out as far as Ubuntu and my
laptop compatability is the webcam. And I am not worried about that
right now. Everything else including the WiFi, works just fine. Thouch
pad, touch controls, EXTERNAL MOUSE, exturnal keyboard, and onboard
keyboard all worked with out any addional tweaking or support.
So I am really left to believe what I first though. It has to be the
installation of windows. Like I said before, mine worked just fine
until I formated. For whatever reason either these laptops have trouble
installing windows properly, or the windows installation that was used
for this model had errors to begin with.
I am going to try and get a Windows Vista 64bit OS cd from a friend of
mine tonight who is a IT guy, and install a clean installation of
Windows. If that doesn't help solve the issue, then it is beyond me and
I give up lol. I'll blame Microsoft and Gateway and use this laptop as
my Linux based computer."

thanks everyone for the help, i always use the touch pad, and not an external mouse. I just updated the alps device so hopefully that will fix it. its very frustrating!
did the windows 7 upgrade fix it?? i tried the mouse thing, but i dont use an external mouse and even after messing w/ the settings, it still does it.. please let me know if the windows 7 upgrade fixes it!
