There should be a setting for thick cardstock or envelope that you may have to change to in yoour "prefenrences" settings. I have used heavy paper in my Canon ip3500 with no problems.
The issue is not with the ink cartridge but with the actual print heads. In most (almost all) Canon ink jet prints/multi functions the prints heads are separate from the ink cartridge.
The print head is what guides he ink onto the page, if they become dirty or clogged then you will get lines through images and text or very poor print outs.
You can clean the print heads by using the software that came with the printer and there are some other ways as well.
I tried to paste the instructions from Canons site but they were too long. Use the link below to go to Canon's knowledge base for the MP520 and search for "clean print heads" and follow the instructions that come up.

goto to printer property, first you will find printer folder in your control panel. open up printer folder, you will get a list of printer. right click on the mp520 printer and click on properties, you will get a window, click on the maintenance tab, click on ink cartridge setting and change it to use both black and color
Hi Fixya
Many thanks for your interest, Imanaged to solve my problem, It was the microchip on the ink tank which was not set properly so all I did was reset the chip and it worked .
So if anyone has a similar problem first try resetting the microchip.
Kind regards to all, Roy.
