Have you tried setting the color to black cartridge only. You may be printing the black with a combination of colored inks. I occasionally have a similar problem. Sometimes I can get the black to work by taking a paper towel dampened with distilled water and holding it against the cartridge print head until I see black ink coming out. Replace the cartridge and try printing again. If this doesn't work try a new cartridge and run through your Printer Settings, making sure they are all set properly.
unless you are printing and choosing black only, the printer uses the color cartridge also. Go into advanced settings and choose black only. If not you may try and replace the color cartridge, or return the cartridge, it might be defective.
First print a self test page on the printer and check if you have black print on it or not.
To do that Go to your printer :-
Press Setup button -->Go to print report-->hit ok--> use arrow keys and choose the self test page.--> hit ok.
If you have the self test page fine then try to make a black copy from the printer.
Put a black font printout on the scanner glass facing downwards. Press copy black
Check if you have the black ink working.
If yess then there is some thing on the system you are doing wrong. May be the printer properties needs to be set or some settings needs to be checked.
If no then try to clean he ink cartridge and try to align the cartridge on the printer.
To align Do this
Press setup-->use arror keys to navigate to tools -->and choose the option align cartridge or align printer.
If you do not find the option in the tools option try looking for it in the print report...
On the computer Go to printer under control panel and right click on the printer and go to print prefernces --> go to the TAB called colors and under color options -->choose print in greyscale--> and under that choose the Black only option. --> hit apply and then hit ok.
Put a teeny tiny bit of oil (3 in one on fingertip) all over the slide (chrome bar that you see looking into the printer from the front) and retry. Just a thin film, NOT enough to drip.
The self test and align 'scan and print' procedure is timing out.
I figured out my problem. My son-in-law help me set everything up including my wireless router and wireless printer. The printer was turned on, but the print cartridge holder had not been aligned. When I turned it off and started it up again, it went through the alignment process and move the cartrigde holder to the right position. The cartridges popped into place just where they needed to be.
i have an mp170 all in one and when you fill the cartriges they dont show up as full cannon put a chip in the cartridge to con people into buying new ones try siting the cartridges in warm water for a few hours then blot the cartridge with tisue paper if it dont blot out the ink the cartride is finnished and you need a new one .To align the cartridge you flick through the menu on the printer not pc screen look for alignment page print this off then you have to pick the dark boxes on the sheet shade the bit next to it and put on your scan bed and click ok it should scan the sheet and reset the alignment
the printer keeps saying "press enter to align cateritage" so i press enter. there was no black ink so
I went to the printer store and bought a refill on black ink...
Put the refilled cateritage in the printer and again its says allign cateritage. It takes about 5 minutes, and it prints out a piece of paper and says alignment failed....
well, what i did, and it seemed to work, in the short run anyway.
i took and threw my hp in the back of a waste management truck,
then i called amazon.com and i ordered a new epson printer,
