Too bad they didn't describe that sound... I would be curious - would be nice if there WERE such a warning sound for timing belt replacement...
here's a question for you - how strict should we adhere to the recommended timing belt replacement mileage suggestions? Is there some other way to check whether timing belt is approaching end of life?

Loud noise when starting /engine shaking and coughing

sounds like your have timing issues and the loud noise is known as a back fire if I am correct about you having timing issues. If I am correct I would recommend a new timing belt and related components. Also replace the spark plugs and you should have the valve clearance checked and adjusted. They need this every 60,000 miles and the timing belt should be replaced every 105,000 miles.

I have 86,000 miles on my 1993 240 Classic. What is the maintenance schedule and what should be done at this time?

Most car dealers recommend maintenance services at 30K, 60K, 90K and so on. The 30K service is mainly focused in inspection of the systems and replace of the fuel filter.
The 60K is expensive for cars with timing belt. The coolant, transmission oil and filter, and the brake fluid has to be changed. The air filter and spark plugs has to be replaced at this time too.
Most costly is the replacement of the timing belt. Volvo recommends for Volvo 240, changing the timing belt every 50,000 miles. Needless to say, they are pretty religious about this now.
The B20, B21, B23, and B230 engines are non-interference engines, meaning that the camshaft can be rotated independently of the crankshaft and no damage will result to the engine. That is, if the timing belt breaks, the valves will not hit the pistons; the engine will simply stop.
On the other hand, the B234 16-valve engines and any of the other Volvo multi valve engines are interference engines. Loss of the timing belt in these engines will result in severe or fatal engine damage.

How much to replace a water pump

4cyl $350-$500 V6 $450-$750....Because this vehicle's water pump is timing belt driven, this repair may be costly. If a timing belt service hasn't been done within the last 30K miles, I recommend replacing the following: timing belt, idler and tensioner pulleys. hopefully this help'd

Does it require tune up

Regular Maintenance is vital to keeping your car on the road. The time and effort you put into keeping up with scheduled maintenance can save you big money in the long run.
Dealer 30k, 60k or 90k mile tune-ups can run from $250 for 3-4 hours of labor and basic maintenance, to over $1,000 at places with high labor costs and additional maintenance services, such as timing belt replacement.
If the mechanic identifies needed repairs, this can add a significant amount to your total.
At 90K repair shops normally replace the timing belt, or timing chain.
Your car require a tune up, if you have more than 30K on it. What kind of tune up your car needs depend on how many miles do you have on your car.

Just purchased 1992 olds cutlass supreme 3.1 L V-6 that has not been driven since 2004. What should I change, look for, before I put a lot of money in car? Car has 114,000 miles, engine sounds strong. I...

Normally the tune ups for cars are scheduled at 30K, 60K and 90K. If you do not have the maintenance records of this car then, you have to change the fluids, and inspect many things.
You have to flush radiator, flush braking system, change engine oil, and the transmission oil.
Inspect and replace if necessary, the spark plugs, spark plug wires, serpentine belt and belt tensioner.
The ball joints and tie rod ends has to be inspected too.
The most important thing is to make sure that the timing chain has been replaced. It listed for $142 at NAPA parts.

Just bought a 2004 Honda Civic VTech with 37000 miles. When does Honda recommend changing the timing belt?

Do you mean inside the engine(timing belt)?Or do you mean tensioner belt which is attached to a/c,alternator,fan etc.?If you mean tensioner belt(which seems more like what you are asking),then it just needs to be inspected periodically. If there are frays, knicks,or cracks, then it needs changing. They may have a requirement,I am not sure, but when companies have set scheduling like 30K,or 50K mile checkup,it is more likely to require inspection to determine replacement needs, rather than a definitely change at such and such miles.Good luck!

Does a 2004 Avalon with 27000 miles need the timing belt and fuel pump replaced when there have been no problems and the car has had regular maintenance at dealership?

Most timing belts last from 70000 to 120000 miles, so I really don't think you need to worry about a timing belt. If the car starts right up and doesn't hesitate or bog down when running, then the fuel pump is good as well. The only things that would require replacement at this mileage are the air filter and the inline fuel filter. Sounds like someone is out to make a fast buck or two off you.

87' porsche 944 timing belt change and calibration. HELP!

Timing belts on 944s NEED to be changed every 30k miles. It can be a challenging job. I would recommend a shop. Balance belts, rollers and usually a water pump replacement is recommended at the same time. Cost, approximately $1400. Parts can be purchased cheap, but labor is 8-9 hrs.
If you decide to do it yourself you will need a specific timing belt tensioner gauge tool.
Good luck
