Unable to pick up local ''free'' channels following digital change over. Using RCA DTA800 converter and Phillips 2750/27 antenna. Can pick up only one local channel, but signal loss is more often the case....squares and dropped signal. What more expensive equipment do I now need in order to pick up the old free local network channels? DISH? Direct TV? There must be a way to access these local channels without subscription to satellite companies, as these free local channels were available before the change over. Or, perhaps not.......

First of all, make sure all your connections are secure and threaded all the way in. Next, go to the main menu and press 5 (configuration) and press 1 (search for channels) if this doesn't work, press 4(signal strength meter) and see how strong your signal is. You may just need to re-position your antennae. If all else fails try system reset(number 5) and repeat search for channels. I've had similiar experiences with mine but I have a 62% signal strength and still get 20-something channels. Hope this helps.

Why can't i pick up channels using a RCA converter box, amplified HDTV antenna on my rca XL 100 analogue TV

If you live a good distance from the TV station you may need a better antenna. Did you do a channel search on the converter box? You'll need the remote for the converter box to change channels, not the TV's remote.

RCA DTA800 TV Converter Box I need TV codes for the remote to work. The TVs are a GE, phillips magnabox

Good day,
I might be missing something, but you are describing a converter box that converts digital signals from an antenna to analog.
The converter box will be set to channel 3, and you should set your tv's to channel 3 as well.
Using the remotes that came with the tv's go into setup and if available as an option, you will find an option to select cable/antenna or automatic. Select automatic or antenna and save. If there is a selector switch on the back of the tv's, set to 3.

Connect antenna cable into input, and use supplied cable to connect from the output of the converter to your tv.

plug in power supply for converter box, tune tv to channel 3 then follow instructions to setup converter box including channel scan.
When done, the converter remote will control everything. However, the tv volume control will work even though the converter remote will have volume as well. The tv remote as well is needed to shut off or turn on tv. These functions can on most tv's be performed on the set as well.

No codes are required. The converter remote will work on any tv.

If you want to use both tv's then you will need a splitter on the output of the converter to send the signal to both tv's. Only one channel can be viewed at a time.

Viewing separate Chanel's requires a second converter box and a splitter connected to the antenna cable for viewing separate channels.

More options are possible, but I hope this helps you get started.
The converter box takes place of the tv's tuner and in essence disables it.

NO channels now, we had some before!!!!!

Here is how you should have it connected.
1- Antenna (rabbit ears or whatever)
2- Converter box
3- Television

When you turn on the TV and the converter box, go to channel 3 on the TV. You should see the converter box signal there. If you do not see it try channel 4. Bring up the convert box menu and go through the AUTO SEARCH, not manual search. Now your box will search all the frequencies and add any stations that are in your area. Make sure you change channels with the converter box, not the tv. An antenna on the roof will still provide somewhat better range, but even rabbit ears will likely pick up something. If you still get no channels you could be too far away, digital signals have a shorter range than analog signals. You can check your local TV stations website or call to see if they are broadcasting digital yet.

Insignia digital tv converter/indoor antenna no signal

Ok first I can save you some money. Take your "HDTV" antenna back. There is nothing different about the antennas needed receive analog and digital signals. If you got reception without your converter box, use the same antenna with your converter box.

Next let's see if there is a problem with the box. Hook up a television with the antenna. How many stations do you get? Now hook up the same television & antenna, but this time put the converter box between the antenna & the TV. Do not turn on the box. Now how many stations do you get? If the number is different, the box is not allowing the antenna signal to pass through. That is bad. You want your signal to pass through the box so you can still pick up stations that don't broadcast digitally. Some areas of the country will not be covered by digital stations from all major broadcasters when the changeover happens in Feb.

My suspicion is either you did not have the antenna hooked up to the converter box when you searched for channels OR you are in an area that is not yet broadcasting digitally.

I hope this helps you solve your problem. Thank you for using FixYa and feel free to add more questions here by using comments.

The instructions for our DTA800 digital to analog converter box for over the air waves for TV signals say since the signal is too weak that we need a SMART ANTENNA. What is that and what do you...

Hey boykinpierce,

The phrase "Smart Antenna" is often used to describe a multi-directional antenna or antenna array. These types of antennas are able to detect and automatically adjust to any changes in the TV signal strength you receive, and can generally be obtained through most major retailers. They primarily are used in areas where digital signals are weaker or somewhat inconsistent, and will attempt to optimize the signals they do receive before sending them to a TV or digital converter box.

Please keep in mind that while some DTV digital-to-analog converter boxes may have built-in Smart Antennas, this particular model (RCA DTA800) does not appear to have this feature.

If you're still not quite sure what to look for, please remember that you can always speak with a home theatre sales agent at your local Best Buy™ store for more information.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

DTA800 do not receive UHF

I am not from that part of the country, so I can't say for sure, but check the following:

1) Are the UHF channels local and small stations? If so and under a certain power level, they are not required to broadcast in digital. THere may not be digital UHF channels local to you.

2) The changeover is required by law to occur by Feb 2009. Not all stations have made the change yet. You could still be in an area where the stations have not yet converted to digital broadcasts.

Make a few calls to find out which category yuo fall under above. If you don't fall into either of the above, update this and we'll look elsewhere for the problem.

Installed and setup RCA DTA800 digital converter. Ran a channel scan and did not pick up any channels. Have an outdoor antenna with an amplifier. Need advice.

Try bypassing your amplifier. I was getting an incomplete scan, and that solved the problem. I ran the scan without the amp in the line, then turned off the TV and converter and reconnected the amp.
