How do I know if my unit is still under warranty

is it getting power, if so check the manual for an internal fuse. you might have over heated it.

how old is the unit?

Probably not as a cracked display usually results from dropping or sitting something heavy on the unit.

If it just cracked under normal use, then this would be a defect and it should be covered under your warranty. The only sure way to know is to take it in and try your best to convince them that this is covered under your warranty.

FYI, the warranty is probably from the manufacturer, unless you got some extended warranty through Best Buy? Otherwise the stores responsibility varies from state to state.
