It powers up, lights come on but the platter won't spin. ... However when I press "start", nothing happens and the platter won't spin when ... the arm towards the record without pressing the "start" button. ... SL 7, SL-10... and / or any of the fully automatic Technics turntables using optical record detection......etc

Hi Daniel, its a bit of a long shot however try this. With the turntable powered of manually rotate the platter approx 12 times to reset the auto operation back to default. John styluscity.com
Hi,Dead as in no power up or dead as in the turntable will not spin?? If
the turntable isn't spinning check and see if you have a direct drive or
belt driven.Getting back to your turntable, if it is belt driven your
belt may have become dried rotted. replacements are available at
elexatelier.com/ ,

needledoctor.com ... good luck, definitely worth getting it up and running again...
It would appear this is a belt drive turntable - here's a link to a site where you can order a replacement, although you may be able to find a cheaper one.
