This is answered on the sony support pages see http://www.sony.co.uk/section/contact and then enter 're-tune digital channels' in the 'search by keyword' box for the explanation. It basically needs a software upgrade which will be downloaded free if you've still got a freeview channel - but if you've lost them all you'll need help - anyway it's all explained by sony.
You can only get the freeview / digital channels through cable by subscribing to a package which includes them. They will then supply the necessary decoder to get the channels. Otherwise you will need a digital aerial and a freeview box if you tv is not dtv ready.
as long as you have a good digital aerial connected to the recorder and you are in a good signal area then the channels should have been found automaticaly and stored on the machine.. a manual search and store would also work ok.. check your aerial connection/aerial type and any info you can find on freeview availabiliy in your area.. do you or anyone in your area have any other freeview device running ok?
Press the [i+] or MENU button on the remote control to display the DIGITAL INFO menu.
Press the BLUE button to display the MAIN MENU.
Press the UP or DOWN buttons to highlight AUTO TUNING then press the OK button to display the AUTO TUNING MENU.
Press the RED button to start the auto tuning process for all available digital channels.
Wait for the process to complete.
If you wish to CANCEL the auto tuning process whilst it is processing then press the BLUE button at any time. You may lose some channels when you retune the TV as the channels have been rearranged. To locate them look at the EPG although you may still find that some channels are no longer available on FREEVIEW. See the following link for additional information http://www.freeview.co.uk/_retuneinfo/
Products such as this will use an internal tuner to tune channels, this tuner will not detect your televisions freeview stations, to record from your television, connect scart out from tv to the scart in on the recorder, then select the scart A/V channel, use the television to select the channel you want to record, you will not be able to record 1 freeview channel and watch another freeview chanel as you only have 1 digital tuner (in the television) the recorder does not have freeview built in.. hope that helps
