When plugged into a laptop the Archos 604 (not Wifi model) comes up with a red screen and says "shutting down necessary, cancel any transfers". I've never seen this before, anyone got any ideas? Is it a fault with the Archos or the laptop?

Had the same problem (seems to happen if I remove the Archos from the TV Cradle while its powered on).
1. Remove the battery from the back (you must slide the lock button).
2. Use a ballpoint pen or paperclip to press and hold down the reset button
3. put the batter back on and power back up.

Okay, I just started reading your problem and started freaking out because it was happening to me and I suddenly thought that I would have to replace it. But luckily, my only problem was that I needed to prop-up my archos while it was plugged in. I would think that somewhere down the line, me and you have both knocked something loose in the connector. Luck to you, cheers.

The WIFI range is very short and walls can cut you off.
You need to be close and have a strong signal to pick up, I have used mine in a train station on BT Openzone and on my home network.
The small speaker is not that good but headphones work well.
You can buy the "Portable Speakers for Generation 4 portable video" but I don't know what they are like.
