It is possible that your new ink cartridge is bad, but it is more likely that your jets on your printer are clogged - and that is preventing the ink from hitting the paper.
You can purchase an ink jet cleaning kit from your local office supply store and try that.
Also, if there is an available ink head replacement kit for your printer, it might be beneficial to go ahead and change that out now too.
Click the "Advanced" tab while in the "Printing Preferences" window. Choose the "Print in Grayscale" option to print in only black and gray to save on your color ink.
It should not come all the way out. Just till it stops, then the new cartridge locks onto the top of the hopper. Once you have pulled out the shutter, the toner falls into the hopper. Pushing tghe shutter closed causes the cartridge to pop up in the front so it can then be removed and thrown away, the cartridge does not stay in the machine.
The solution for your printer is that you re-install your printer drivers this should solve your problem. You can also try to take the ink cartirage out and give the cartirage head a wipe with a tissue. I hopr this helps you.
