My 9 year old miele s314 red star has functioned flawlessly the entire time. the last time i used it, i believe that i accidentally kicked either the side of the main unit or the edge of the on/off switch itself. when i did that, the main motor immediately stopped. since then, the on/off switch does nothing.
this vacuum has been used about once every 4 or 6 weeks for 9 years, so in no way is it overused.
since past the 5 year warranty mark, i don't want to pay to fix. questions: what should i expect to pay for a diagnosis from an authorized repair facility? also, does anyone know if there is a way i could pop off the rectangular plastic piece that covers the on/off switch, to see if it is jammed or something? thanks!
Most likely the problem is with the cord winder. This is the most common problem with Mieles. It is actually the most common problem with any vacuum with a cord winder. A Miele repair center should not change you to look at the vacuum and tell you what is wrong with it. The Red Star was a great model and if the powerhead is still in goood condition I would get the vacuum repaired. If it is the cordwinder they can usually be repaired and it should cost about $75.00. If you need a new cord winder this will cost about $150.00. The top piece can be pryed off, however if it feels like it is switching than it is not jammed.
Testimonial: "i took my vac to a good miele service location. diagnosed as broken cord winder, just like you said. about $150 to fix, also like you said. thanks!"
