I trying to fix a small office network and need some help. I have a netgear ds116 hub that currently has a linksys WAP54G access point connected to it for wireless access. The access point is not encypted and no in the office nows the passwords to get into the setting thru 192.168.1.1. I tried to do a hard reset on it. No help. Also the linksys access point for some reason has SONICWALL firmware on it. I am thinking my best option it to just swap out the access point for a extra wireless router I have at home. I have a linksys wrt54gs. I tried to just swap the access point and the wireless router and could not get any data form the internet. Is there something I need to configure on the wireless router?

Try this:

On you cellular phone go to the Data Network and turn it off then on. This helps me when I have the same issue. Im using an IPhone.

Ensure that your laptop WIFI is correctly setup and specifically turn on the option:
'connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name SSID'.

If it does not help, try the followings in order:

• Reset the router (make sure that you backup your current router setup or know how to reload i / reconfigure).
  
• Change Wifi Channel on your router as the current channel frequency might be clashing with other wireless devices (handsfree?).

You must be more PRECIS with your question... What I understand is that you want to connect two computers to the WAP54G (wireless Access Point)??? an than you mention wires ??? if it's because the Access Point is set up to bridge with an other wireless network you can not hard wire two computers to the AP (since it has only one port) unless you have a multi port SWITCH staked/connected to the AP, if the AP is set up to broadcast a WIFI connection than you just need to set up the second computer with the same information as the one all ready working (SSID, ENCHRYPTION KEY, etc...) if it's because you are trying to NAT one computer connected to the AP to an other computer through hard wire, than you need a switch and a good understanding of networking to share a single network connection with two computers...

you said that you that you reset the WAP54G , the default IP address address of WAP is 192.168.1.245.
The IP address that you tried ( 192.168.1.1 ) must be the IP addres of the sonic firewall which might be acting as a DHCP server.
To access the WAP54G set up. you will need to connect the computer to the HUB and the WPA to the hub with the cable and then try to access WPA with the IP address 192.168.1.245

Here's what you can do. Don't connect the Linksys router yet to the hub. Connect 1 computer directly to the Linksys router. Access the router's setup page of the Linksys router thru http://192.168.1.1

It will prompt you for username and password. No username and password is admin.

Look for Local IP Address or LAN IP Address. Change the LAN or Local IP Address of the Linksys router to 192.168.5.1 then click on Save Settings at the bottom. Right after saving the settings, unplug the power of the Linksys router, connect it to the hub and it should be good to go.

If the power lost power for at least an hour it loses its entire configuration. There is no current fix for this that I know of

the ip address of the 2wire router might be different from the ip address being used by the wap54g (ip address is 192.168.1.245 by default) that's why it's not being detected.
you need to directly connect the wap54g to a computer and set the computer to use a static ip address (ex. 192.168.1.240) and run the cd that came with the wap54g. you need to set the ip address of the wap54g to the same segment being used by your router to make them see each other

i think the problem is that when there are a number of pc's sharing the same wireless network the bandwith has to be shared and can be with upto 255 pc's. Connecting 255 computers to a single WiFi access point, while theoretically possible, is not recommended. Performance of such a network will be very poor. Install multiple access points instead to distribute the network load. By adding more access points to the network, effectively any number of computers can be supported (though the network becomes progressively more difficult to manage). On a home network, while dozens of computers and other devices may connect to the router, the performance of a shared Internet connection will quickly degrade as more computers access the Web simultaneously.

Ok, so why do you need an access point upstairs and a router downstairs connected wirelessly? If you can't connect with a laptop or a pc, why whould you think you could connect the access point? The purpose of this configuration would have to be with the access point to the router via ethernet. What's the point? If the problem is range, check out http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php to enhance the capabilities of the WRT54G... and maybe building a parabolic antenna for it as well. Plans to do so abound at Lifehacker.com.
