Fill the tank about 2/3 full. put the cap on tight, pump the air pump about 50 to 75 times to pressurize the fuel tank, you may have to turn the pump knob in a few turns to get a good pressure feel when you are pumping, then push the pump down all the way and turn the knob in until it gets snug. then you turn the gas knob on until you hear a hissing noise. turn it off and stick a large lit match in thru one of the holes in the steel plate below the lens and hold it close to one of the mantles then turn the gas on again and it should light up. let it run for a minute or so until the mantles light up brightly and then turn it on the rest of the way. I've done this hundreds of times. hope this helps and good luck. Jeepfxr

How to install new mantles?

First of all, make sure your lantern is completely shut off and cooled down, and you are working in a well ventilated area away from any external fuel sources.

You need to remove the screw holding the top cap on, then remove the top and the glass globe.

Then remove the remains of the old mantle(s) and then tie on the new ones in their place.

Then, with the lantern fuel supply turned OFF, carefully light the mantles with a match or lighter and allow them to completely burn to ash and the flame to go out. Do not touch the mantles after this point because they will be very fragile.

Now carefully replace the glass globe and screw the top back on.

Now you can try lighting the lamp normally with the fuel valve in the ON position.

I have a dual fuel, two mantles, coleman lantern. I have changed the mantles several times and they keep getting holes almost every time i light the lantern.

Make sure that the vapourised fuel is coming through the mantle before lighting up. You should hear a hissing sound when the flame adjusting lever is turned to high. If not it is possible that the generator is clogged up and that vapourised fuel is not getting through to the mantle. So when you light up you are essentially just burning the mantle. If the generator is knackered it will need to be replaced. One way to check it to remove the generator, primed the tank and turn the valve on. If fuel spurts out when the generator is removed (DON'T LIGHT IT U)P THOUGH) but there is no hissing sound when the generator is intact then it is a sure sign that the generator is clogged up. In the UK a replacement generator should set you back £10-15. Hope this helps, Bandit

This lantern is designed to run on gasoline, but will work best with white gas, also generically known as "coleman fuel" in many areas. White gas is in fact a more pure form of gasoline, without many of the fine particulates and impure distillates found in automotive gasoline.

Most hardware stores and sporting goods stores carry Coleman or other brands of white gas.

I have a coleman 220k lantern. I can pump it up but it doesn't seem to get any fuel to the mantels. I have read about a generator but what is it and what does it do?

Hello, W/D here.
The generator is the small brass tube located close to the mantles. Here's how the lantern works: You pump it up until you get a decent pressure, or your thumb falls off, whichever occurs first. Next, you turn the main knob to the lighting position, which is usually marked as a 1/4 turn to the right. Then, you manipulate the small valve in between the mantles until you hear a gas flow. Turn the valve until the gas flow is lessened, then light the mantles. Adjust the small valve to get the mantles glowing. Re-pump up the main tank, and close the internal stem valve by rotating the plunger in a clockwise manner. Open the main gas knob to the run position, or fully, depending on your model. Adjust the gas flow at the small valve to keep the gas from flaring up at the mantles.
The heat from the mantles heats the generator, which atomizes the gas, and maintains pressure on the tank via the return tubing. As long as the mantles are heating, the length of time between tank pumpings is greatly extended, but usually not eliminated completely.

I cant get any petrol to pump into the mantles

If the petrol doesn't come through first check that you have enough in the tank. If the tank is not full enough it won't come through. If it still fails to come through it's likely that the generator is blocked. This is the tube which the mantle sits on and it has a very narrow opening to force the petrol to convert to vapour when it's warm. Try heating it for a while and it may clear it. Otherwise you'll need to buy a new generator.

Note: while the dual fuel lanterns can burn petrol you should be aware that it gives off poisonous fumes, like cars did before they had catalytic converters. The lantern should not be used indoors with petrol. They are safe with coleman fuel. If you live in the USA, Coleman fuel is cheap but if you're in Europe it's much too expensive. Rather than buying a new generator, if you live in Europe, you could buy a parafin burning lantern like the Petromax 500 available from http://www.pelam.de/index.php?cPath=28_31&language=en&gclid=CIOe46DQnqYCFQkf4QodQxz2Zg
and other sites, or you can pick up second hand Optimus lanterns on Ebay. Both burn parafin, though they need to be primed, and provide at least as much light as the Coleman.

I have a Coleman 228F model lantern. When I go to light it, it barely produces any gas. I have made sure it is pumped adequetly and full of new fuel. I can hear gas coming out very faintly and sometimes...

It's likely that it was left away with fuel in it. This causes gel to form which blocks the fuel getting through. The blockage could be anywhere between the tank and the mantles. The order I would check in are;
  1. The feed tube assembly
  2. The generator
  3. The Burner
It's possible to get these parts from coleman or coleman suppliers. To find which needs replacing you'd need access to another similar lantern and try replacing one at a time. Otherwise it's going to be trial and error or just replace all.

How to light coleman lantern

Kerosene lanterns require a little more than just lighting the mantles. Go to Coleman's website and find the directions (for free) for KEROSENE lanterns. The generator on the lantern needs to be preheated with alcohol before it will actually light. Make sure lantern is a Kerosene lantern and not a white gas (Coleman fuel) type, there is a difference even though they look similar.
