I just got an ARCHOS 404 multimedia player. I pulled it out of the box to charge it thourgh usb. The instructions say the light will come on.. but nothing is happening. I think its defective. Just want to check if I'm doing anything wrong. Please help!
Leave it to charge for 2 hours just in case there isn't enough power for it to boot up properly until it has an initial charge.
Does the USB port work with other devices?
Try another USB port, then hold down the power button the top button on the left side. Hold down for the count of 15. If this still doesnt make the light come on wiggle the connection of the USB cable at the device, to make a better connection.
My dad had the same problem, we changed USB ports and wiggled the wire at the device held down the power button then it came on to charge, First charge takes 2 hours.
Have you tried the reset butten on the unit - you will need a paperclip or somethink to push it. then try charging. it may work it may not but no one has said this yet so give it a try.

No, the Archos 404 can start while charging. I had mine on after about 5 minutes of charging. My guess is that you bought a defective product. If you bought it new and have the receipt you can get a new one within 90 days.

I've tried different USB ports and different computers, wiggled all the connections, held the power button for 20 seconds. Nothing.
Same situation here...plugged into multiple USB ports, and no LED light indicating like the manual says. Have tried the reboot option, but doesn't seem to do anything. Unit appears dead.
I have a similar problem with a 605 I just bought, but I found the unit will only charge when connected to the docking station.
