WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH HL 2040 PRINTER , LEARNT HOW TO RESET , FIXED THE PROBLEM. TRIED TO PRINT A WORD DOCUMENT , WOULD NOT PRINT - BUT WOULD PRINT EXCEL DOCUMENTS. WHILST TRYING TO GET STARTED AGAIN...

Hi Ron, I dont think you have a printer problem, i think you have a print driver/computer problem.

To find out unplug it (the usb) from you computer, turn it off so no data remains from previous print commands sent from your pc and run a self test by holding your green go button when you turn it on, keep it held untill toner, drum and paper lights light up, then let it go, then press the go button and the printer will print a self test....

If this works ok then we know your printer is ok. and your issue is as i suspect it is, with your print driver, paper size or tray select settings in Driver or in Word or in Excel or your document.

You can isolate if document problem by doing self test in print driver in control panel..

If self test on printer unpluged works and we have no error lights and are seeing the test ok and no flashing lights then you may want to ensure driver is good by completly unistaling the driver on your pc, do this by unistalling all brother stuff from control panel/programs and features (depends on operation system you are using).

Then with it still not connected, go to brothers web and download the full software and drivers package to suit your operating system, run it and only plug in the usb when instructed.

Let me know if your printer shows an error when not connected or if self test fails and Ill go down that road with you... if paper light on it when not connected, it tells us we have a jam, make sure you check back door and under toner drum and paper is sitting neat in tray

But when you tell me excel works and word doesnt, i dont think printer, it is software.Check your page size settings in word and excel and of your documents as the flashing paper light may be the printer trying to tell you the data sent to it from word is a paper size mis match to what the printer has in its tray and it wants you to feed the correct size paper in the manual feed/bypass slot. You should also check paper size and tray selection in your print driver in printers and faxs under control panel is the same as your document. Here is your manual

and here is where you can download your print driver (unistall old software and unpug usb first)

The more i ponder this, it is page size settings in document/excell/word and printer is asking you to feed paper in manual pass slot (above tray)

I have a HP Deskjet D4160 printer, printer is not working anymore, i have an arrow blinking all the time on the left side, have tried disconnecting and reconnecting plus unable to find problem in trouble...

The following page documents all blinking light errors: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00635074&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=501857&lang=en . Which cables did you remove when you " tried disconnecting and reconnecting"? Was the printer on when you removed the cable.

I assume you mean the light with the rectangle with a bent corner and the arrow pointing towards the user on it. This is the Resume button/light. If none of the other lights are blinking and the power light is on, check if there is an error message on the computer. This error message will display if you have the full software driver package installed. See the section for blinking resume light for pictures and all of the steps. (I'll summarize them below.)

If you do not have the software installed, check the following.
1) Is the printer out of paper or unable to pick up the paper? (If you have the error message "Out of Paper" this section applies.) Add more paper then press the Resume button. Remove the paper from the tray and check for any torn bits of paper or foreign objects in the tray. Check that the rollers are also clear of foreign objects. (Clear the rollers if needed). Place a stack of paper that is between 10-25 sheets (uniform size, unwrinkled) in the paper tray and press Resume. See if that clears the problem.

To clean the rollers, use a lint free cloth and bottled or distilled water. Turn off the printer and unplug all of the cables. Remove the rear access door, use a slightly dampened cloth (squeeze out the excess water). Then place the cloth against a roller and rotate the roller upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure Repeat this for all of the rollers then allow the printer to dry (10-15 minutes). Finally replace the access door and plug in the printer. Press Power to turn on the printer.

2) A paper jam (This will be the error given on the computer) Turn the printer off and on after a 60 second wait. Print a test page (press and hold the Power button then press the Photosmart Express button). Release both buttons. The test page should print; if it doesn't, follow the rest of the directions. Clear any paper jams from the unit (be carefull not to tear any paper). Turn off and unplug the printer. Then remove the rear access cover and remove any paper from there. Next lift the printer cover and remove any paper from that area. Use a flashlight to check the corners. Slide the cartridge carrier and check under it. Make sure the cartridge carrier moves freely. Move the cartridge carrier to the left if it is on the right. If it is on the left or in the middle, move it to the right. Check both directions. Close the top cover and replace the rear access cover. Then plug in and turn on the printer. Attempt to print a self-test. Stop if the error is gone and the self-test prints. Otherwise, clean the rollers (see above). If the issue persists, reset the printer. Turn on the printer then remove the power cord from the printer. Then unplug the cord from the wall. Wait at least 15 seconds before replacing the power cord in the outlet and then the printer. Turn on the printer (if needed and try a self-test). If the error persists, the printer needs service. Contact HP if the printer is still under warranty.

3) Cartridge error. Make sure the appropriate cartridges are properly seated in the correct slots in the carrier. Remove them and reseat them. Clean them (damp Q-tip and bottled water) - clean the electrical contacts only. Let dry and then replace the cartridges (make sure they are fully seated). Try new cartridges then do an alignment of the cartridges (from the computer - use the Printer Toolbox). Try resetting the printer as in issue 2. Again the printer needs service if the error persists.

Note: plug the printer into the wall outlet directly during the reset. I like to remove the usb cable from the printer and the computer during resets. Sometimes waiting 5 minutes is better than 15 seconds. For the software, see http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=501857 . Select your OS and click Next.

I hope this helps.

My Alps MD-1000 is not feeding paper. The tray will move forward and i can see the wheels roll but the paper is not being fed into the printer. I tried doing a self print test (disconnected from a cpu) and...

Here are a couple of suggestions: Try taking the cover off the printer and check for dust near the paper sensor. While you have the cover removed, give it a good spray with a can of air. Be careful, not to break any parts or to pull out wires. Or you can try setting the paper option in the driver to the thick paper. This sometimes helps when I have a paper feed problem.

913 service motor error

If this is the first time you have seen this error, do the following:
  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Remove all installed paper trays.
  3. Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in each tray. If it is not, reload the paper into that tray.
  4. Look up into the printer where the paper tray slides in and out. Check the feed (autocompensator) assembly for any damage.
  5. If everything is fine, reinstall the tray and power on the printer.
  6. Try printing a few print jobs.
  7. If the error does not return, continue using the printer as before. Keep an eye on it for the next few days. If the error does not return, it may have been an isolated incident.
  8. If the error returns just as soon as you power on the printer or when you try to print again, you will need to find out which paper tray/paper source is causing the problem.
  • If the printer has only the one integrated paper tray, the problem will be with either the tray 1 pick arm/autocompensator assembly or the printer's engine/system board.
  • If the printer has more than one paper tray installed, try printing from each paper tray one at a time. The best way to do this is to have all of the paper trays empty and then proceed as follows:
    1. Put paper in tray 1 only.
    2. Print from tray 1.
    3. If tray 1 works fine, empty tray 1 and put paper in tray 2 and so on until you encounter the error message.
    4. If you receive the error when printing from one particular tray, power off the printer to clear the error.
    5. Power the printer back on.
    6. Skip the faulty paper feed slot and move on to the next one (if another one is present). If you can print from all but one of the paper trays, this is the source of the problem.

If you have extra paper trays/drawer units installed and the error occurs from only one particular source, there are some things you can do as a temporary fix.
      • If the error is occurring from an OPTIONAL paper drawer/source, power off the printer and remove the defective drawer from the printer. You will then need to set up the printer to print from a different tray. For information on removing an optional drawer, click here.
      • If the error is occurring from the integrated paper tray (tray 1) AND you have optional paper trays installed, take all of the paper out of tray 1 but leave tray 1 installed. Set up the printer to print from one of the other paper tray sources (tray 2, tray 3, multi-purpose feeder, etc.).
    7. And if your getting the same error then you need to get it serviced...

1. Verify the following: * There is sufficient paper in the paper tray (at least ten sheets). * The paper tray is not overly full. * The paper stack is touching the back of the paper tray. 2. Slide the paper guides so they fit firmly against the edges of the paper. 3. Press the Resume button to continue printing. good luck :-)
