Dell Dimension 4600 desktop memory upgrade

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 desktop with BIOS A10 running 2.8GHz. It is using Windows XP OS and 512MB RAM. I have just purchased 2*1GB RAM for the remaining two slots. The added memory is not recognized. I checked the BIOS and it only shows 512MB DDR SDRAM installed with speed 400MHz. The newly added memory is PC3200 DDR 400MHz.
I removed the CMOS battery and reinstalled. BUT still no luck in recognizing the added memory. I also changed the Boot.Ini file to "fastdetect" the Physical Address Extension. Still no luck.
What do I need to do to get the added memory recognized and usable?

I hope that you checked and those 1G units are compatible with the slots...I mean if the pc supports 1G units...some mo Bo do not support more than 512 on a ddr slot...if the compatibility is OK ...try to see if inserting one unit in the slot where the 512 it id now ...make it work ...this will verify the compatibility too...if is working it means that they should work together too
so ...removing the bios battery was a smart move ..cause it needs to get t default optimal settings ...but ,,,cause we are talking about ddr 1...you should look for a setting that allow multiple slots too ...and also check the units compatibility to work in multiple units way...
after all that is done ...even if the pc do not sees the ram memory entirely ...I suggest to reinstall the operation system from scratch ...I do had a problem like this with an assus pc ...and after reinstalling it was ok ...

Well first the mother board needs to be capable of handleing that much memory you can check that by going to the dell website and checking the specs on that model pc or mother board if the bios isn't recognizing it the chances are it won't but take out the 512 stick and just try one of the 1Gig if it does recognize that then try the second stick if it doesn't recognize them both then chances are it can't handle that much memory.

My system says, (RAM) radon access memory low cpu intel (r) pentium 4 cpu, version 2.80 ghz. RAM 256 mb. What can I do to resolve this problem. Dell 4700 dimension

Windows XP requires a "bare-minimum" of 128MB of RAM, works "OK" with your 256MB of RAM, if you don't open too many programs at the same time, and if you close/re-open Internet Explorer about once an hour of usage.

But, Windows XP would be _much_ "happier" if you added 256MB or 512MB of RAM, because it is telling you ("available random access memory is low") that it is using all the RAM.

Add more RAM -- your computer will run much better.

New ram memory on dell dimension celeron trying to

You should check with the folks at Dell since whoever wrote their technical manuals for this machine can't do basic math. There are 2 memory slots and each can handle a maximum capacity of 512MB, yet they claim the maximum capacity for the machine is 2GB instead of 1GB. Using 512MB modules would probably work.

Dell 2400 ram upgrade problem

RAM can be finicky so first test all memory slots with a known good stick (your 512MB). Make sure you're starting from a complete power down and you get a POST beep (hopefully your system is set up to beep when it powers on) and everything loads up all the way through to your OS.

Once you do that with all your memory slots test with the new stick by itself in all memory slots. If neither of the memory slots work with the new stick but you verify that it works in another system you should then check your BIOS settings and RAM timings to ensure compatibility with your stick. If you can't find the timing on the RAM stick itself, look up the manufacturer's part number for the information.

Good luck!

I would like to change my hard drive

If you are looking to save just a "small" bit of $ .. 2 - 1GB sticks should be cheaper .. but what is the current configuration . is it 1 - 1GB or 2 - 512MB or 4 - 256MB?

You have the option of IDE or SATA drive so either is an option .. You may want to get a drive copy utility and just "clone/ghost" your current to the new drive and then swap it to master and GO

Memory capacity

You seem to be a little mixed with your question,256MB refers to your memory, which applications use to work, but when you mention download space, you would be refering to your hard drive space. If you right click on My Computer, then click on explore, then look at your 'C' drive it will tell you how much space you have left. If you are running Windows XP 512MB of memory is adequate, unless you are photo or video editing, or using memory hungry programmes, in which case 1GB would be better for performance, depending on the maximum amount your motherboard will allow.
