Sony generation 2 radio/cd works fine but during the last couple of weeks the the display has gone very dim making it difficult to read wich wouldn't be too bad if it didn't include the car clock display.

It would not be possible that a detail cleaning would cause that to happen. When you have no display on the screen it is usually the LCD display that has failed. Unfortunately that means a new radio.
Internal workings of the radio, if the radio is operating fine then your bulbs/lighting inside the radio is bad as the lights come on with power to the radio. Normally they don't replace this and just swap the radio which is expensive. If the vehicle is still under warranty I would take it back and even if its not its an 08 go and raise hell to the dealer and force them to buy you a new radio!!

The radio on most american vehicles has two fuses powering its functions. Ie--CD player runes but is not amplified. Clock works but not radio. Check all the fuse headings again...ALL FUSE PANELS, there are usually more than one. sometimes 2 panels Inside and under the hood as well
YOU MORE LIKELY HAVE TO REMOVE RADIO TO GET TO THE BULBS.I WOULD LET THE DEALERSHIP FIX WHEN YOU REMOVE RADIO BY IT BEING PART OF THE ANTI THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM YOUR CAR WILL GO IN THEFT MODE KEEP CAR FROM STARTING.AND THE AIR BAG IN DASH.THIS IS DANGEROUS JOB TO FIX YOURSELF.
Sometimes things just quit working. Not many parts on a car last a lifetime anymore. Chances are your stock radio has gone bad and it would'nt be worth while to have it fixed. Go to a ruputable audio place( best buy, circuit city) have an aftermarket radio/cd player installed, this would be the cheapest fix for your problem.
lol...My 02 Altima Original Radio....wouldnt read ..or skipped on Cd,s in the morning ......in the evening it played fine.....I replaced it with one that plays mp3,s......and very happy now :) 6 years is the norm for a radio...
You have a problem for sure. As your Toyota is 16 years old and probably high mileage, you can try having the transmission fluid and filter changed to see if that solves the problem. If it does not, then your only recourse is to seek professional help.
