Have you checked boot device options....from BIOS
Use F9 during boot to goto ROM-BIOS and change Boot device option to CDROM/DVDROM.
Insert Boot media or DVD-Win2003, to DVD-ROM device..
reboot Server, try now
If still issue.. Check to boot Server using some other media..
if other cd media works, then it could be DVD-Win2003 faulty, otherwise download firmware for CD/DVDROM and upgrade it and check if DVDROM works, otherwise you have to contact Dell Support..

How can I use my external dvd writer of dell vostro 1014 for boot?

You can ONLY boot up from the USB DVD drive if the BIOS has the option in the boot order that allows the USB to be the first boot device.

How can I use External USB DVD rom for Boot to dell optiplex GX260 series.

You have to change the boot settings in bios (hit F2 as you see the Dell Logo) and in the boot menu look for one that says boot from USB, or external CD drive, and move it to the top of the list so it will boot before the hard drive does.

I have an Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook. It dosen't have an internal CD/DVD-Rom Drive. I would like to re-install the OS using and external USB cd/dvd Drive. Can this be done, and if so how do I go about...

You can install the operating system using an external CD/DVD drive. for dell systems, make sure you have the external drive connected then when you turn on the computer press F12 to access the one time boot menu. on the boot menu choose the option for CD/DVD drive. after pressing enter it will prompt you to press any key. once you get to the welcome page just follow the onscreen instructions to install a fresh copy of windows

My dell vostro a840 laptop booting problem..it does not boot by enternal or external DVD writer.

You must first of all enable drive boot.
Press the relavent "F" button just before booting to enable the BIOS menu.
Select boot sequence and set DVD/CD Rom as first boot device.
That will enable the drive on the notebook to run at boot.

I have problem wiyth Dell Latitude 505 with corrupted windows xp. I can not boot from cd/dvd because it is broken. Can I use external usb DVD and boot from it ?

For that you must put the USB first in the boot order from the BIOS and disable/remove the CD/DVD entry - leave the hard disk in second and nothing else.

Booting with External DVD for Dell Inspiron 1525

Power on your system, Press F2 on Dell logo. This would take you to system BIOS. Ensure that USB controller is ON, and USB emulation is also set to ON. Save settings and Exit. System would reboot now. Press F12 on Dell logo, and select USB ROM as the boot device. This should boot your computer through your External drive. If it still doesnt work, try switching to a different USB port. If none of these steps work, it may be a problem with the boot sector on your External drive.

Good Luck!

Computer hangs during boot up after instlaling lexmark 6650 print

This is a problem I've seen with Dell PCs, what it is doing is trying to boot from the card reader on the printer. My PC had this problem, and a Dell BIOS upgrade fixed it. It would even try to boot from USB keys or mp3 players I left in the USB slot! So I have a feeling you have the same problem I had.

If you don't feel comfortable updating the BIOS, then contact Dell and maybe they can walk you through it.
