I have an older model Kenmore stacked washer/dryer combo, model# 417.99170810, circa March 1992 if I'm interpreting the sticker on the top of the unit correctly ("03-92").
I have two problems - one is the dryer drum squealing from the worn out bearing bushing (which I found great help on in this forum), and a broken heating coil.
I have the old type coil that is strung in a circle behind the drum. One of the miniature "Christmas tree"-shaped ceramic standoffs used to hold the heating coil wire off the back mounting plate has broken.
I can buy a replacement heating coil wire for $24 but if I buy the coil wire kit that includes all 15 ceramic standoffs, that kit costs $40 more at $63.75.
My question: Can I just leave the one broken ceramic standoff off when I replace the coil wire and use the remaining original 14 standoffs, or is the risk of some type of accidental grounding of the coil wire and subsequent overheating or even a fire too great?
And if I can leave off one ceramic standoff, which is the best position to leave empty - at the top of the heating coil circle, at the bottom, or on one of the sides?
I'll spend the extra $40 if I absolutely have to, but it sure seems a waste if I don't need to, just for one little replacement standoff.
Thanks in advance!

If this is a small combo the problem is probably one or more of the suspension springs has become detached. You need to get the washer cabinet off. take the panel between the washer and dryer off. then there are 2 clamps holding the washer top on. they are in rear right and left. Once you get the top off you will be able to take the front of the washer off. At that point you should be able to see the problem under the tub. In most cases you can reinstall the plastic shaft back into the spring by screwing them back in.. This is not easy but can be done.

first of all. comming from a Sears Technician.. (don't yell) -- the delivery drivers only know about delivering stuff. they dont know too much,
if the two are the same size they can be stacked.
sometimes have to rig something up
and yes, for that model the top is removed, clips go on the rear and screwed at the front.
in some areas it is sold seperatly as a stacking kit
