The laptop begins to load up. It even shows me the logos and lets me sign in my password. Once that is done the screen goes blank and doesn't show me the desktop icons, just the cursor.
I just repaired mine with the exact same problem. Here is the repair! Turn off comp with power botton. After shut down turn back on. You will get Dell screen then windows logo. If windows is saying resuming windows thats your problem. It is trying to go back to were the problem started. Next screen is sign on. dont sign on. look for shut down options botton. click shut down. This will shut down windows. When you restart, you may get a blue screen, let it dump the memory. It should then ask you if you want to restore to an earlier date. YES. Let it do what it does, should be OK about 20 min. Hope this helps.
Try booting to the safe mode (F8 at boot) and see if you can log in via the safe mode. If you can't, try booting to your Windows CD, go to recovery console and run CHKDSK /R
If you still can't log in, try running diags see if the hard drive lists a failure.
if no hardware failure found, there and none of those solutions work, then re-installing windows will likely be the final resolution
