1. Go into control panel
2. Open internet options
3. Click onto the advanced tab up at the top.
4. Click reset. (its just above apply)

Its most likely an old browser plug-in that is clogging it and that will remove it.

Why does my internet freeze? what can I do

If your computer as a whole is freezing, then you have to check for viruses / malware.
But, if it is only your internet that freezes up, then try resetting your Internet Explorer.
I am presuming that you are using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, as your browser.
To reset Internet Explorer (IE) :-
1. Open Internet Explorer .
2. Click Tools, and then click Delete Browsing History.
3. In Delete Browsing History, click Delete All.
4. Click to select the Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons
check box, and then click OK.
5. Switch to the Security tab.
6. Click Reset all zones to default level, and then click OK.
7. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
8. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
9. When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the default settings, click
Close, and then click OK .
10. Uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions option in the Settings box
11. Close Internet Explorer . The changes take effect the next time that
you open Internet Explorer .
Try to reset IE, as explained above.
Even after resetting IE, if IE still freezes, then there may be some viruses / malware on your computer.

When I try to get into a certain financial website to check our investments, we are shut down with the following message appearing on the screen. "Internet Explorer has closed this website to help protect...

Try using a different (non-virus-infected) computer.

Be sure that you're accessing the "official" web-site, not a "phishing" (and "unauthorized") copy of the financial web-site.

Upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8.
Start IE, and click 'Tools' and 'Manage Add-Ons',
and disable unneeded toolbars. Close IE, and re-open it.
Now, try to access that web-site.

IE8 from Microsoft cannot give you viruses. Did you download ie from another site?

This looks like viral activity for real.
Could be coincidence that it happeneed after installing IE 8 whether from MSoft or otherwise.

Delete the ie 8 and do a system restore to a point earlier ...

Error message when closing IE

Try Mozilla Firefox and see if the same thing happens. lol.. IE is a white elephant in general. You might need to go to add/remove programs and uninstall IE from the windows components section and reinstall it possibly, personally though I would not re-install IE after removing it though, lol. As urban dictionary defines Internet Explorer - a perfect program for downloading Mozilla Firefox, lol. Good Luck!
