I checked out the defective CCD links - looks promising.
The only worry is that the viewfinder/lcd works fine and video works fine.
If it's the ccd surely the bad image would show on the viewfinder...
It's interesting the blogspot link says "Another symptom may include purple scratchy lines showing up on the LCD monitor and the camera's pictures." This exactly describes the pictures but not what I see in the viewfinder.

I have this exact problem with my Canon S1 IS camera. I also thought of trying to update the firmware but the camera is already at 1.0.2 so it won't update it.
Video mode works fine, and even in the remote shooting mode the picture looks fine until you actually take a picture and the white/purple lines show up. This isn't a firmware problem. This looks like a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should will this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

this can be usually associated with your white balance in still camera mode.
Check to see your white balance is set correctly or just set it to auto. Also make sure the mode you are in it set. (ie. indoor, outdoor, auto, speed)
Sounds like you accidentally pressed the DISP (Display) button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save battery power. You could then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn it back on, just the DISP button one more time.
Have u tried switching the view from and eyeview(viewfinder) to LCD while viewing pictures. Sometimes we forget it and panic. Hope it helps. Good Luck.
Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail.
