Subtracting monomials

Hi there,

Remember that the SHARP calculator does not solve algebra.
But some tips for adding and subtracting monomials include:
Group all the terms that are like terms (they have the same variables and exponents. Make sure that you move them with the sign in front of them (dont lose your minuses).
Add or subtract just the numbers in front of the terms and leave the variables exactly as they are when you write down the answer.

Minus sign display problem

Calculators have two similar signs: the regular minus sign for subtraction, and the negation (change sign) sign. When applied, the latter changes the sign of the quantity to which it is applied. The minus sign - for subtraction is on the central line, the negation sign is smaller and somewhat raised above the center line.
The change sign key may be marked (-) , (+/-), or +/-

Answer always appearing

Minus and change-sign are two completely different things. Minus is used to subtract one number from another. When you press minus when the input line is empty, your telling the calculator to subtract. The only way it can subtract the number you're about to put in is to subtract it from something else, and that something else is the previous answer, hence the "Ans."

If you want to input a negative number, use the change-sign key. If you want to subtract one number from another number, use the minus key.

Try pressing the plus key when the input line is empty. You'll get Ans+ in this case as well, The same with multiply and divide, among others, and for the same reason.

My calculator will add, but after my total and then I want to subtract, it subtracts by the number I added.

If your calculator is more of an adding machine it works a little bit differently than a calculator. For an example: 10 + 5 - 2 on your machine do the addition of 10 + 5, then to subtract the 2 press 2 then the minus sign to get the total of 13. I hope this is helpful.

I do not have the manual. If I want to add or subtract do I put the total amount in and than hit the plus or minus key ? i.e., $128,000 -10000. do I hit the minus before the amount or after? -1500....

You can download the manual from
http://downloads.canon.com/cpr/software/calculator/P170-DH-(USA-HWB).pdf

128000 - 10000 then press = or chain the calculation by pressing + or - and the number you want to add or subtract.

Can't get it to subtract

Remove the back of the calculator and attempt to wipe down the "minus" key contact and push the actual key to ensure movement. Put the calculator back together and try it again.

Every time i punch in 1000 - 500 i keep getting a negative sign in front of my numbers. and the = doesnt work. please help

Hello,
Calculators usually have two minuses, the regular minus sign and the change sign sometimes labeled (-) or (+/-). The latter is not meant to effect a subtraction, but to take the negative of the number you just entered. Big difference, would you say, but the syntax is different.
Ex: 15 - 7 is a subtraction with result 8
10 (-) displays -10 on the screen.
In some calculators the change sign is smaller than the regular minus, and is raised above the main line.
Hope it helps.

How do I get this calculator to substract

Big calculators work a little different than handheld calculators. Like the above commentor explained, if you have a basic "whats 100 minus 20?" You have to entered as 100 + 20 -- And when you hit the minus button at the end, it will give you the total. 100 is the positive number, and the 20 is the negative number that your subtracting. Also you can hit 20 -- 100 + and get the same total because you entering 20 as the negative and 100 as the positive, just in reverse.

My calculator will not let me add or subtract percentages.

I have a Casino MS-80S and yea, the percentage works different. As example to take 100 and subtract 10%, this is what I do: 100 X 10% - and then I get the answer 90 after I press the minus key. To add the percentage instead, 100 X 10% + will give me an answer of 110, after I press the plus key.

How do I enter 10 to the power of -9.42 on the calculator?

No. You computed 10^1 - 9.42 which is 10 - 9.42 = .58

Instead of the minus key, which subtracts one number from another, use the change-sign key [+<>-].

[1] [0] [y^x] [9] [.] [4] [2] [+<>-] [=]

or else

[9] [.] [4] [2] [+<>-] [2ND] [10^x]
