Is it a black screen right when you boot your computer? If so this could be a fatal disk error and the harddrive has crashed.

There is no easy fix other than to replace the harddrive.

You can try pressing f4 at startup screen and seeing if it gives you the advanced option to factory restore, which would be located on hard drive.

Or

You can call HP (compaq) and ask them to ship you the restore disks, I think they charge shipping only for this option.

A disk read error occurred saying Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

i would like to share few things to u.

1.you can see the vista drives in federa but can't see federa drives on vista.

2. 2ndly if u have burned any thing in the xp cd even a 1 kb file then the bootable disk will get corrupted and from next time u can not use that disk to install xp.

borrow from ur friend and try again keeping above things in mind.

one more thing if u want to use that 20gb then either u have to delete that partion from boot prompt only or u can also do it by partition magic only.

Only windows went corrupt (normally it doest when u turn off that way ) reinstall it dont use the recovery disks , but use a windows installation cd to re-install windows , but take care that when u install ,install on a different partition and remember to take the option leave the current partition intact without changes , so that none of ur data is disturbed.

Problem with a disk read error

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.
