Hi.
Here is support page for your camera.
From support page you can download the software or purchase a new disk. Without software installed the computer will not detect the camera .
Here direct link to download, you should not need the firmware, download just software:

To buy a disk instead: Order Replacement Parts

How can I import my pictures to my new computer. I have a smart zoom dsc-p41 cameral and a new Dell computer with Windows 8?

With the camera came a disk, with software for your computer. Before you can connect the camera, you have to install the software. It could be the driver on the disk is old and windows 8 won't allow you to install that one. If that happens, visit the sony support site to download the newest software and drivers. (also go there if you can't find your disk)
Only after you installed the software, you can connect the camera and switch it on.

I cant turn on my camara to my laptop

Most brands of cameras deliver a CD with the camera, containing software, needed to backup, transfer and work with the pictures shot, on a computer.
Most of the time there is software is for both, Windows and MAC.
Before you connect the camera to any computer, you should install the software. The disk also has the drivers for the old operating systems.
If you lost the CD, or just don't know where it is right now, you can go to the site of your camera brand and try to download the software you need. For that look under support.
If your camera is old, and the brand does not exist anymore, try a freeware picture transfer / editing software pack. Like Gimp or Adobe Photoshop elements.
Just connecting a camera to a computer causes two things. The camera shuts down, and the computer won't recognise the camera. So nothing works.
Some cameras can be charged with an USB cable connected to the computer. Another reason, why the camera shuts down when no software and no driver is installed.

The computer would require photo editing softwares installed to recognise imaged from camcorders. for example, generic image softwares also with photo format convertors performs recognistion of foreign images like with camcorders. Download the image format converters, possible the brand details of the camera is useful towards acquiring compartible generic image photo softwares.

An elderly woman in my building gave me a digital camera, a Vivitar Vivicam 3750, a battery recharge pack and a USB cord. She does not have an installation disk (and has no idea what that is) and I want to...

Windows will recognise the camera as a storage device without any drivers or installation disks being installed...just plug it in, turn on the camera and wait till windows recognises it...it will then appear in My Computer as a new driver (E:,F:.G: etc etc).

Right click "My Computer" and choose properties.

Click on "Hardware" from the tabs up the top, then the "Device Manager" button

Click on your computer name (top of the tree list) and you will notice a new button apear up the stop (scan for new hardware)...click on that and then follow the prompts that come up (Found Hardware Wizard)..

Also you can go to

http://www.vivitar.com/support.php and search for your camera and grab whatever software came that was with the camera

Difficulty connecting to laptop

Assuming your laptop is XP then it should recognise the camera as another drive. Have you installed the Camera software that come on a disk? If so uninstall it and let Windows do the work. The other way is to invest in a cheap USB card reader
