I bought a JVC everio off of craigs list, it did not come with software. I am trying to get my videos on my computer. When i plug it in to my computer nothing pops up on the screen and on the lcd screen of the camera it says "USB MASS STORAGE" HELP what do i do, how can i get my videos on my computer?
Go to your "my computer" icon on the computer and you should be able to see all available drives on the computer. Your camera should appear as an external hard drive. You can open the drive and then open the files in the drive. Simply click and drag the files from the camera to your video folder on your main hard drive and you are good to go. Windows Media player should play the videos....or use an editing software like power dvd.

Your PC is seeing your camera memory as USB mass storage and this is OK. Nothing is wrong with this. Follow the screens and you will see that the computer will see your camera as USB mass storage, and when you open the folder on your computer the camera pictures will be there.
Windows is set up to see cameras as USB mass storage devices for simplicity, so your computer can accept pictures from any camera that connects by USB without needing special software.
If this bothers you, most cameras are sold with their own special software that starts when the camera is connected. Check your users manual and follow the instructions for installing or downloading the software.
Plug the USB cable into the computer and the camera. Your computer should recognize the camera as a mass storage device, and open a window allowing you to transfer the contents of the camera onto your computer.
To Answer your question: If the PC says it safe to remove, this means that it has completed all data transaction between Camera and PC. The Camera will remain in the USB MASS STORAGE mode until the 5v USB is removed (USB cable disconnected from PC).
I suggest you read further and perform the procedure at the end of this LONG explaination. Sorry, I would have paraphrased if possible. The short version is that you do not need to worry about "Safely Removing" the camera.
The Term "SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE" is misleading. You run no risk in losing the original data if it is already backed up from the location you are writing from. For EXAMPLE, if it is saved on the Camera and you are only copying from the Computer to the PC....there is NO RISK of losing the data on your Camera by disconnecting the USB without safely removing.
The process of "Safely Removing" the camera is necessary if your Camera is set to "Cache" data as it writes to the PC.
If you do not have the camera set to "Cache" as it writes to the PC, you Do Not need to safely disconnect as the Data has been immediately transferred and stored to the Computer Hard Drive.
Cache means that the Camera files are written to a volitile memory location on the computer before final storage to the Computers Hard Drive. If the Camera is setup to do this and you do not safely remove the Camera before disconnecting the USB, there is a potential for data Loss....on the computer side.
You may check if your Camera is set to cache using the following. These Cameras should be default "no caching"
1. right click "safely remove" ICON
2. "Safely Remove Hardware" Window Appers
3. select the JVC Camera on the "USB Mass Storage.." drop down tree
4. select [properties]
5. select "policies" tab
6a. select "optimize for quick removal" if you want to eliminate need to "Safely Remove" (BEST)
6b. Select "Optimize for Performance" (FASTER)
the camera should basicly appear in 'my computer' or in 'computer' as its called in vista these days. Other than that
try to import video - on windows media maker.
you can always backup those movies you want to your computer using a software like nero from majorgeeks.com and use this. for you to have a fresh start, reformat the cam afterwards and look for a latest fiemware update.
I get the same thing, but if you double click on the mod file, it will play. The "Mass Storage Device" is always on when the Everio is connected to the computer.
