Usb is plugged in, says its not when trying to scan

either replace the usb cord or plug it in a different usb port.

try to change the usb cable or plug it on a different usb port.

Try plugging USB into rear of PC if its in the front.

There could be many reason for not scanning. It could be drivers or could be the cable which is connecting your printer to your computer. If you have already tried to re-install the drivers, try and unplug the usb cable and plug it again. If that does not work, try and plug your USB cab directly to the printer and see if that work.

Try disconnecting the printer from the USB port and reinstalling the CD program. Don't connect the printer to the USB port till the program says to do so.

buy a proper usb cable..the one with the filter

so when you un-plug and re-plug in the usb windows gives you
the disconnect /connect tone.
if not then you may have broken/cracked the usb connector ,
have you re-powered the printer and tried a scan test at the printer

There is a workaround without messing with drivers. I have the same problem if I use the buttons on the v40 and try to scan. I get the V40 can not connect to the PC message.

Workaround:

Go to Control Panel-->Scanners and Cameras

In there you will find: Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet V40 Scanner

Right click and select Scan. It will then start the scan wizard which will scan your document.
