If you're looking for a spindle lock, there isn't one. Unplug, remove the motor from the base and lay it on the bench on its side. You should have two wrenches. Use one wrench on the inner nut just under the collet, the other wrench on the outer nut of the collet. The bench will help stop the wrench on the inner nut as you turn the outer nut counterclockwise.

I would suggest going to Dewaltservicenet.com and typing in your model number for an owners manual for this tool. If you still need more help let me know and I will try.

'remove the collet' not sure on your question. but the collet is the part that holds the cutter and sits in the collet assembly. the collet is held in to the nut with a spring clip, if you remove the spring clip the collet comes out.

How do I change bits on P/Cable 690LR?

If the collet was tightened without a bit in it, it may have been squeezed so it is too small for the bit shank. Completely unscrew the collet from the router and see if the bit will go into it. If not, you can try forcing an old bit in using your vice, and then using as hammer and punch to remove the bit, but most likely you will have to get a new collet. Just search "Porter Cable router parts to find a source.

How to remove the chuck from a porter cable router?

To remove the collet (not the collet nut) you must first take apart the armature from the field.
To do this,
1. Take the cap off the top by removing the two Phillips screws.
2. Remove the two brushes.
3. Remove the two Phillips screws hidden under the cap.
4.The only thing holding the top and bottom pieces now is a friction fit of the bearings. Tap with a non marking hammer on the top housing underneath the brush holders, and it should come apart after a few taps.
5.Use an armature split sleeve and put the armature sleeve in a vice to hold the armature.
6.Then use a wrench and unscrew the collet from the armature.
7. Just reverse this process to put it back together.

My porter 1/4" router

Have you tried taking out the collet and cleaning it and the cavity where it goes? If there is any wood dust present it may be causing the problem. If that doesn't fix it, you may need a new collet.

Porter cable 7310 has broken spindle lock. THis is a brand new router and the spindle lock pin is broken and the motor will not spin. what is the best way to fix this

you would have to remove the bottom section of the motor housing. this would require removing the collet nut and the screws holding the housing in place. I would suggest going to "dewaltservicenet.com" and downloading a breakdown before attempting. It is not really that hard if you are mechanically inclined. The pin is more than likely jammed into the armature shaft that locks and that is why the motor won't turn. Let me know if you need more assistance.

How do i change the bit on router?

On my older Sears router there is a lever on the base near the collet nut that you slide to engage the motor shaft to lock the motor shaft for bit changes. On newer models you may have a button or different mechanism to lock the shaft. After the shaft is locked you can use a small wrench to loosen the collet nut, usually by turning it counter-clockwise (viewed from the base). Once the nut is loose the bit should slide out (sometimes the bit is stuck in the collet and the nut may need to come all the way off to get them apart). Just replace the bit with a new bit with the same shaft diameter, tighten the nut, and you are set. If the new bit has a different shaft diameter than the old bit you may need to change the collet also (in general, different collets are used with different bit shaft diameters).

Laminate Trimmers Troubleshooting

Changing Bits: 1. Unplug the tool. 2. Turn the knobs on either side of the tool to loosen the base. 3. Remove the base. 4. Press the spindle guide to lock down the shaft. 5. Use a wrench to loosen the collet. 6. Remove the bit and collet. You may have to tap on the collet to loosen; careful not to tap on the cutting edges of the bit. 7. Insert the new bit and collet. 8. Use a wrench to tighten the collet into place. 9. Replace the base.

How to adjust the collet easily?

Look for a button that will lock the collet in place. This will allow you to adjust the collet with a single wrench, without having to wrestle with several wrenches.
