I have a whirlpool bath with jets but although the power is still on when I push the button nothing happens. Any idea why? Could it be a blocked filter we are in a hard water area and so have lots of limescale.

Air Switch Repair
It sounds like you have a bad air switch located in your motor.
The air switch is what the air hose connects to on the back of the motor or on the box on top of the motor. The other end of the air hose is connected to the air button on the lip of the tub.
This is a latching air switch and when you push the air button it latches to send power to the motor. When the air button is pushed again it opens the latch in the air switch and stops power going to the motor shutting it off.
When an air button does not come up after being pressed down it is a classic sign that the button needs to be changed. This happens when one of a couple things happen:
The bellows in the air button have broken and therefor cannot push the button back up.
There is calcium built up on the inside of the button
You can clean up the calcium deposits with emery cloth
The problem you are experiencing is common to many jetted bathtubs. It is a result of dried bathing water in the tub. There are a couple of solutions to resolve this ongoing problem.
Use your tub more frequently as the water will not have time to fester in the pipes.
Use a cleaning solution made for cleaning the pipes on jetted bathtubs once every three months.
You find Cleaning and Maintenance Products for jetted tubs at the following website. US Parts Center
see if the jet faces turn at all. Sometimes the jets are adjustable to allow more pressure from some jets. turn the face of the jet and see what happens.
button works neumatically..(has a small ball like bubble) burst on the on position...u can twist off the ring around it and take apart..and replace..(need make n model of whirlpool)
the air switch should be connected to a switch by the motor the air switch is ur on off and should run from the button to another switch by motor the air switches were put in so there was not live wiring by the tub surface ,the the tub button/switch is like a bellows and pushes air into tube to turn switch on/off
youneed to make sure that the switch is on first .their should be a switch for the tub on the wall somewhere.find the switch than push the button on the tub, also make sure that their is water in the tub that is past the jets before pushing the button on the tub.
