This laptop will accept any USB harddisk as it does have USB ports.

I would recommend a 500GB personally as this is the most cost effective and most users are not likely to need 1TB unless using your laptop as a media center or video/music editing platform.

Yes you can use an external HDD to extend your current HDD. If by extend you mean use the external HDD for storage and such.
However if you wanted to literally extend your current HDD by creating a single partition for both HDDs then it could be extremely problematic because the external HDD will be connected with an USB cable. If you were to accidentally unplug the usb cable then your whole system would crash.

Try starting it in safe mode and do a disk check and see if it can fix any disk problem.

You MAY have clobbered some of the disk files and it MAY be necessary to do a restore.

It is likely that the hard drive is bad or a memory issue. I would start by removing the hard drive and see if it goes past the compaq screen. If it does then you know what is wrong. If not message me and will walk you through the next step

this may be due to fault in your display panel, check it by some hardware professional nearest to you
