I plug in the USB cord to the Rio and it says, "Initializing", then, "Waiting". Then I open Rio Music Manager and all the music from my computer is there, but no sign of the Rio. It doesn't give me the option to upload anything either (The upload arrow won't turn from gray to green when I select a song). I can't find any sign of it being connected to my computer, other than the screen of the Rio itself having Waiting and the circle arrows. -Also, if it makes any difference, when I unplug the USB cord it makes the "something has been removed from the USB port" sound.
Same problem here. My Nitrus plays the music on it, although my problem is identical. I see you never got a solution. 1. turn on rio, works fine. 2. connect rio to computer or laptop, get the connected cable sound. 3. Rio reads "initializing" then "waiting". 4. Computer does't recognize anything is connected. Usb cable works. Unable to format as recommended because computer doesn't see it. This problem came out of no where. Still looking for a solution. This rio is 5 years old and I was very satisfied with its performance up til know. DA4EVER88 at yahoo.com
Mowcius,
i had the same problem peter, but when i went to my computer it didnt even show that there was anything plugged in... i know the usb cord is working because when i plug the player in it asks me questions about what software to use. You know of anything else to try?
I have not been on FixYa for about a 1/2 a year so as I seem to be the only person answering Rio problems I have only just seen your problem... Sorry, so if you haven't bought an iPod yet (or you want to try and fix this anyway) then I would recommend wiping and rebooting your player:
Windows only.... Please post if you are not using windows...
Open My Computer with your Rio plugged in.
Right click on your Rio player and click on format.
Leave the default values - if it asks you something then use your initiative.
Then click on format.
Then
when it has finished formatting go to your firmware (can be downloaded
from: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/product.asp?prodID=112).
Follow the instructions and then it should load the firmware onto your player.
When it has done then your player should (in theory!) work properly.
Hope this helps

Somebody, please! It's been almost a month now!
Screw it, I'm getting an iPod.
Typo earlier. Should have said "It SAYS," not "It WAYS." Anyway, it doesn't work. Also, for what it's work, if I ever get it to work how do I DELETE the crappy music that's already on it and substitute the wonderful music I want to load into it? No instrctions for that seem to be available. Whatever you load onto the teeny hard drive seems to be stuck in its parallel universe forever. I tried to order a dowload CD from the Rio website for you can't do that over the internet. In fact, you can't send them ANYTHING over the internet. Some support!
Computer doesn't recognize the Rio Nitrus as an accessory. It is from another planet, as far as Windows XP is concerned.
