When you switch on start pressing F8 repeatedly until you get the boot options.
Choose "SAFE MODE" and continue from there.
You will be asked to continue just before windows starts select "YES"
Now go into your control panel and elete the offending drivers etc.
Restart the laptop.
As for your overheating issues
Only do this if you feel competent in doing so.
Pulling apart laptops is not for the faint of heart.
If you really must do it there are some good guides here.
An alternative is to get a can of compressed air used to clean computers. Put the nozzle on and spray it in every hole you can see without putting the nozzle itself inside the laptop.
Do this outside with glasses on. .
Take a peek here for more ideas of what is involved.
There are a few are tips for various things in there.
DON'T touch the CPU cooler unless you know what you are doing and have some thermal grease for CPUs to hand if you remove it at all.
Your boot drive is not "Active"
You will have to obtain a third-party utility to make it bootable and remove the offending drivers.
I strongly recommend "Partition Commander" (any version) from Avanquest. Version 10 is $45... Other experts may recommend a similar free utility. I trust Partition Commander.
It is easy to use and can make your disk "Active"
And you can "browse" the disk to remove the device driver, or even backup your data. (Fry's, Best Buy, Office Max, Depot, etc.)
A common laptop/notebook problem is overheating, this can cause undesired operation of the machine, including your exact problem, inspect all fans and cooling sinks to be sure they're clear of all dust and debris (this may require dismantling your machine, best left to the techs, unless your brave!). Also another common problem with these units and is related to the overheating, operating the machine while actually on your lap, the idea is to get the coolest air possible to the heat sinks, this cannot happen when airflow is blocked or the inlet air is pre-heated. if your system does not require cleaning then i would most likely say that one or more of the components have been damaged by overheating, in this case, have the machine serviced by a professional. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: Boot from CD does not work.
You should definately be given the choice to boot from cd, when you press F2 to get into the bios and go to boot options, what boot options do you have?
If you go into the bios you should have the choice to boot from ide (hard drive), cdrom, floppy disk, network (on some) and try other boot media.
Are you going into the boot option in the bios by pressing F2.
SOURCE: blue screen unmountable boot volume
Sounds like a bad hard drive. You can try using a live linux cd like Knoppix or Ubuntu
Ubuntu is easier for most.
That way you'll know whether it's the hard drive or another issue with the laptop.
SOURCE: HOW CAN I FIX MY COMPUTER? ITS READING UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME?
You need your Windows XP cd for this fix.
Boot from the Windows XP CD and at the first prompt, press "r" for repair. Press 1 when asked to choose windows installation and then enter the admnistrator password. If you don;t have one, just press "enter" and it should show you "c:\windows>"
At this prompt, type the following
chkdsk /r
THis should take quite sometime but will fix the problem at the end. when you get the c:\windows prompt again, type the word "exit" and your system will reboot and load windows XP normally
