Memory Card Error

Recently purchased a 4GB SD memory card and now camera reads memory card error. Can it handle this size memory card? Also, is it possible to retrieve my pictures?

I am having the same problem with the 4gb memory card. I'm getting a Memory Card Error, and when I try to format the memory card to the camera, the option for "format" is grayed out and it won't allow me to select that option. There is nothing on the card (I just bought it), but I don't think anything is wrong with the card. I think the camera can't handle the 4gb card. Other memory cards work fine in the camera. I'm also not sure how to add/remove things to the card when the camera won't work with it in. Any more suggestions? Thanks!

FYI, I just found this on the Canon support website regarding the SD700 IS -

Secure Digital (SD) standard card supports capacities up to 2 GB

I bought a San Disk 4GB Ultra II memory card and the camera throws memory card error and I could not format as the format is greyed out. I found few others had the same issue and it looks like the camera supports only upto 2GB. It works fine with my old card which is 1 gb.

My SD700IS had the same problem. When I put in a new SanDisk 4GB card, the camera displayed Memory Card Error and wouldn't work. I had bought this card to replace another well-used 512MB card that was giving me the error Memory Card Locked. The little slide on the edge of the card that you use to lock it was missing, so I assumed it had broken off in the locked position and simply bought another card (the 4GB). When I got an error with my new card, I made the incorrect assumption that I needed a new camera! I was about to go out the door to buy one when I decided to quickly check the internet for similar problems. So glad I did! I discovered that the 512 is simply broken, and the 4MB is simply too big for my camera. When I put in a 2MB, it worked just fine.

Sounds like the camera does not support SDHC. Check manual to see if this camera supports high capacity SD cards.

I am assuming that the camera continues to work fine with other cards, so the problem is only with the card, not with the camera.

To try to retrieve pictures, get yourself a USB SD card reader&writer (under $10 on eBay), plug it into your PC, and see if the files are readable that way.

If the files are readable, find the folder with JPG files, and simply move them to computer.

If the computer starts freezing every few seconds while you are accessing the card, or the move process is dealing with one file for a very long time (over 10 minutes), the card has physical problems, and there is a chance that things may not be recovered. Try moving each file separately. I did a quick search for you: "recover sd card files" - I found a few shareware utilities that would try to recover corrupted files, starting with "Card Recovery 3.50".

Once you are done with the recovery, determine if the card is usable in the future. Format the card using the camera (look for the option in Menu), take it out and use USB card reader to fill up the card with any junk from you computer, and then try to copy it from the card again onto your computer (create and use a junk folder). If this fails, look for a way for way to exchange the card under warranty, if you have any. Otherwise, the card may not be compatible with the camera (although unlikely). Test it by taking lots of test video and test pictures just to fill up the card, and try to read it. If everything is fine, and you want to take the risk, the problem may be a one time issue and will never happen again. Otherwise, use the card for something else.

Good luck!

Memory card Sandisk 4GB gives error memory card

The S50 uses SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card, and will not work in the S50. You will have to confine your choices to cards 2GB and smaller.

Hi sir
#1 Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from Amazon.com or Buy.com
# 2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
# 3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
# 4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
# 5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
# 6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

Memory card error replaced card but still get error message?

Is it the SD memory card? or the Micro HDD(4GB) you're pertaining to. In case of micro hdd not detected or error, micro hdd socket(CF) assembly has a problem most likely, need to be replaced. SD card; check your SD card's capacity, it can handle only up to 2GB or try to format your card elsewhere and re insert it again in your camcorder, if it will prompt you "FORMAT SD CARD?" you're lucky

Sorry for the extreme delay in answering your question: I've been trawling for old unanswered questions today and yours came up. The following answer will undoubtedly be way too late to be of use to you, but may assist others searching FixYa for an answer to the same problem.

You have been mistaking SD cards for SDHC cards. They look the same but are different, and your camera cannot use SDHC cards as it was designed before they existed. The limitation is due to the hardware in your camera so it cannot be updated to SDHC standards.

Your 2GB card was definitely an SD card as SDHC cards have a minimum capacity of 4GB, and 2GB SD cards are the maximum capacity which your camera can handle. Your only fix is to either stick to 2GB maximum capacity SD cards or to replace the camera with one which is SDHC compatible.

MEMORY CARD ERROR

From what I can see here, the card's size is too large that your camera couldn't support or handle. Maybe your camera is just limited to 1GB or 2GB. Try plugging 2GB card and see if it detects it. I had similar prob where I bought a 4GB card and it does exactly the same thing. I consulted the vendor, he said it only supports up to 2GB thus, it's a product limitation...well I'm stuck there hehe, can't be helped at all..

If you are certain that your camera can handle 4GB card or higher, try to plug the 4GB card into a card reader and see if it detets it. If it does, try to reformat the card and try it again to your camera.

Also, 1 possible thing is that your 4GB card is password protected. Was it plugged in to any other device? If it was, try to plug it back to the same device where it was connected and disable the password.

Onother thing is the brand. Some camera is brand sensitive when it comes to cards. You may need to try different brand as well.

Hope this helps. :-)

SD memory card limit?

The A430 works with MMC and SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card and will not work with this camera. You need to use SD cards, which max out at 2GB.

Message: Memory Card Error - Memory Card Parameter Error on 4gb SDHC card

I recently bought a DMC-TZ3 and have been researching memory cards. Several sites sell cards with the camera and list the card type. I would suggest buying one of these cards. Any cards larger than 2gb must be SDHC type SD cards. There appear to different types of SDHC cards, 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. Check out Wikipedia.org for a description. 2.0 cards are not compatable for devices developed prior to 2.0 so that may be the reason for the camera problem. So far I haven't seen anything that states what type SDHC card the camera requires. I found a computer memory site that that sells memory that they say will work. There may be others.
