engineering standards say around .012" inlet hot and .014" exhaust hot ( air cooled engine )
lowest setting would be .010" hot inlet and .012" hot exhaust ( air cooled or water cooled )

Sounds like your seat switch isn't working. Operator presence (seat switch activated) is required when the brake is released & pro is engaged or your engine will shut down.
If the mower has sat with fuel in the tank, fuel is probably bad. Drain ALL existing fuel in tank, apply fresh fuel. Then see what happens. Have had this happen to me many times, not only w/mowers, but chain saws, edgers, etc. Worked just fine after dumping bad fuel then using fresh gas. Got 'em all going. Let us know if this was your problem.
safety switch in the seat and in the brake. if one of those is open, engine will die when you engage the blades. Owners manual should have wiring diagram so you can bypass switches to test (if you have brake applied and are sitting in the seat and that is when it is dying).
