Erm, theres not difference with the xp discs, just have different software and drivers pre-encoded into the discs. I'd call up compaq and order some new ones or buy another copy of windows xp

Deleting old SP1 partition on dell 2400

Sound like you have two versions of the operating system out there. Not sure what your question is. If you want to remove the old version you should have done that while you were doing the installation. That would have been easy by just telling the system to do it for you.

Now you will probably need some type of partitioning software and i'm not sure if you just delete it if it will cause problems when you try to boot because windows knows it's out there.

If I were you, I would just reinstall windows and clean the disk of everything. It shows you what it finds out there as far as operating systems, so just delete them both, then do a quick NTFS format of the drive and reinstall windows.

Can i download windows xp home addition for free

Operating system installation software is not downloadable, but if you purchased your system with an original version of Win XP Home from Dell for instance, they will send you a one-time complete set of all the software and operating system disks to restore your system. I believe HP does this as well. You can do this online at Dell that I know of as I did this myself and received all new disks without cost.

I TOOK MY LAPTOP TO THE GEEK SQAUD.they said i need to order a system restore cd for a dell latitude 620.something about 5 dl that have been deleted or destroyed.can you help me

The dl's they mention are Driver files.

A Driver file is a small piece of software that allows communication between the Operating System, and a device.

Operating System:
Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 are some examples of an O/S.
Operating System

Device:
The hardware components inside the laptop, or outside, that are, or can be connected to the laptop.

Some examples of inside hardware device components;
Harddrive, (Hard Disk),
Optical drive, (CD or DVD drive),
Wireless adapter,
are just a few.

Some examples of outside hardware devices, (Peripheral's)
Printer, scanner, Fax machine, copier, (Or an All-In-One machine),
External harddrive,

The Drivers MUST match YOUR laptop.
Has to be for a Dell Latitude D620.
Also has to be for the Operating System that is installed on your Dell laptop.

You can download the drivers, and install them, IF Dell has what it is needed.
Some of the Drivers are within the Operating System itself.
They will also be matched to THAT particular Dell laptop you have.

The easiest, and best method IMHO, is for you to obtain THE System Restore disk from Dell, for YOUR laptop, and fix your laptop yourself.
(Cheaper too!)

1) Turn the laptop on
2) Insert the System Restore disk in the optical drive tray, close the tray.
3) When asked do a Repair. (Non-Destructive Installation)

After you get the System Restore disk, come back here, and someone will lead you through it, if you have problems.

{I have heard the disk/s are not cheap. Not a 'fanboy' of Geek Squad either)
{OH! Did i say that outloud? lol}

Looking for possible hard drive how hard is it to self install --with windows xp

A few simple steps:

0. find your original Dell "System Restore" set of CD/DVD disks, or order a replacement set from Dell, or run software on your computer to burn a set of "System Restore" disks.
1. do an "inventory" of installed programs (Adobe? MS Office?) and extract any "license-keys" you need (anti-virus software, purchased software).
2. backup your E-mail and contacts and music and other files, either to an external disk-drive, or burn some CD/DVD disks, or copy across your local network to another computer.
3. turn the computer off
4. disconnect the AC power
5. remove the battery
6. remove the old disk-drive
7. determine if it was an EIDE ("parallel-ATA") drive, or a SATA drive, and buy a new drive of the same type
8. mount the new disk-drive
9. reinsert the battery
10. reconnect the AC adapter
11. take your "System Restore" disks, and "boot" from the first disk, and reinstall Windows and the Dell applications
12. run Windows Update repeatedly (Service Pack 3, post SP3 fixes, Internet Explorer 8) to get all the fixes, and the fixes-to-the-fixes
13. install anti-virus software
14. install other purchased software, using license-keys you preserved
15. download the latest versions of "free" software (iTunes, Adobe Reader, WinAmp, et cetera)
16. import your "data" files

OR.................

if both the "old" and "new" disk-drives are SATA, and you have a desktop computer with two "unused" SATA ports, you can use software, such as the commercially-sold "Partition Magic", to "clone" the old disk-drive, and to "expand" the volume to span all the "unused/unallocated" space on the new drive, e.g., copy 20GB from "old" to "new", and then "expand" the 20GB partition to the full size of the "new" disk-drive. Install the new drive into your notebook computer, and enjoy the additional "free" space.

I need to restore factory settings in my dell with out a disk

Dell Latitude D410 XP Restore Disk
134008.jpg Dell Latitude D410 XP Windows Restore Disk
This is an automated Latitude D410 XP restore disk. The Latitude D410 drivers are supplied in a special windows friendly format. This means that your Dell Latitude D410 XP Laptop will automatically find and install all the drivers for your system, with hardly any user interaction. If you have installed a new windows operating system and half of your Laptop just wont work (with errors like no sound no internet or bad graphics) then this is exactly what this CD has been designed to fix repair. You can also use this CD Disk If you just need to return your software broken Laptop back to the factory setup. There are also a lot of utilities and resources on this cd that you would of found on your Laptop when it was new in its original new condition.

Normally you would need to independently download and install each driver and often enough it will be the wrong one! If you already have other drivers installed it can get very over complicated with device drivers not loading showing errors (like code 10 device cannot start) To make matters worse you end up with allot of older and newer revisions of driver too.

With this driver recovery system all you need to do is wait until the Laptop can not find the device driver it is looking for and put this CD DVD in. Sometimes you may need to select the DVD CD as the location for your driver. That really is all there is to it.

Works every time!
Guaranteed!

THIS CD DOES NOT CONTAIN AN OPERATING SYSTEM!
YOU WILL NEED TO INSTALL WINDOWS FIRST OR USE IT IN AN EXISTING INSTALL.

This CD DVD contains every driver you need for your Dell Latitude D410 XP Laptop.
You are buying an automatic system that installs every driver onto your system with minimal user knowledge and interaction.
This recovery disk includes much of the original factory software and utilities.

How to restore to factory settings presario cq50

2 possible solutions to this

1. Use the roll back function of your operating system to roll back to the last back up.

2. Insert your restore disk or Windows disk and do a format/clean install.

If you have a restore disc it will have prompts to "restore" your system and give you a warning about losing data-save off what you want BEFORE doing this restore

If you have standard windows disk you may want to use the format utility in windows first to clean the drive and do a fresh install.

Once installed don't forget to download updates and back up and then reload your other software.

have fun this will take several hours depeneding on the amount of stuff you have to reload and patch up.

Installed windows xp disk with a scratch and now wont boot up

If you have the Windows Key/License for the XP disk you can use someone else's copy of the XP disk or call Microsoft and ask for a replacement. You need the license and it must not have been installed on another PC previously.
