I have been using my PS3 and Toshiba HDTV with a HDMI connection for about 6 months with no issue. Today I turn it on and the TV states no video input. I have tried a different HDMI cable and the original cables for the PS3 still nothing. I have connected a DVD player with the HDMI cable to my Toshiba, no problem. I have also tried the other HDMI inputs on my Toshiba and I only get audio no video. I have moved the PS3 to my TV upstairs and connected it, it works fine. Any other suggestions? The communicatoin between the two products seems to have stopped.
All: Try this -
Perform the following steps to reset the Video Output Settings.
NOTE: As of system software update version 1.60, the PLAYSTATION 3can
automatically detect an HDMI connection to a TV. If the PLAYSTATION 3
is turned on with an HDMI cable connected, the screen for switching
video output settings will be displayed automatically. (Does not
function unless the TV that is connected by the HDMI cable is turned
on.)
As of version 1.80 of the system update for the PLAYSTATION 3,
the PLAYSTATION 3 can upscale the video content of PlayStation® format
software, PlayStation®2 format software, and DVDs to HD resolution.
If Resetting the Video Output Setting Did NOT Detect Your HDTV Automatically (Certain TV's Only)
With certain televisions, the PLAYSTATION 3
may not automatically detect the HDMI source (TV) which it is plugged
into, even after resetting the Video Output Setting (as described
above).
If resetting the Video Output Setting did not work, you may need to follow these steps to manually locate the HDMI source:
1. Connect both the AV Cable and the HDMI cable from the PLAYSTATION 3 to the corresponding (AV and HDMI) ports on your TV.
2. Proceed with resetting the Video Output Setting on the PLAYSTATION 3 again. (Follow these steps, then continue to step 3 below.)
3. Turn the TV channel to the corresponding "Input" or "Video" channel for the AV Cable connection.
4. Manually change the Video Output Settings to HDMI. (Follow these steps, then continue to step 5 below.)
5. Now switch the "Input" or "Video" channel on the TV for the HDMI port the PLAYSTATION 3 is currently plugged into.
6. Accept the display settings for HDMI before the timer runs out (30 seconds). Highlight "Yes" and press the X button.
7. You can now disconnect AV Cable from the PLAYSTATION 3 and the TV, as it is no longer needed.
With certain televisions,
the PLAYSTATION 3 may not automatically detect the HDMI source (TV)
which it is plugged into, even after resetting the Video Output Setting
(as described above).

Try turning off the power to both and unpluging them for a bit-then try it again.
Thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. I thought I was gonna have to buy a new PS3. My brother gave me this one before he passed, so obviously it meant more to me than just a VG system. Thanks again Heiny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more thing to keep in mind is that on some TV'S (such as the Phillips HDTV) you may have to turn the TV off and the on again as once the HDMI link is lost from a device, as long as the set is still on, nothing else will work, except to re initiate the HDMI source input.
SOLUTION #7 Worked for me. I have a Sony Bravia TV. Unplugged it for a couple of minutes, turned on PS3 and, Voila! I don't know why...I suppose it resets the HDMI input on the TV or something. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion!! I was about to pay someone to fix the PS3.
I had that issue as well just yesterday. I unplugged my TV and then plugged it back in. All the sudden all was well. Give it a shot.
I have a ps3 connected to tv using hdmi lead im am geting picture put no sound y
OK Guys I have been pounding my head on this for awile, it was a compliency update in one of the last PS# updates, I used one of my friends older PS3 before we updated it it worked, updated it and yeps it didnt work. Im off to buy a new TV. Sucks but thats the tech world.
Sony will have the best help on this one but you might have to reformat the ps3... you might have a problem with the reciving ports on your tv or ps3
What worked for me was from a red light position holding the power switch down continuously until the red turned green and then red again and releasing. Then, turning it on normally and it showed the HD settings on the screen! Yippee. Thanks poster who described this solution.
SOURCE: PS3 no longer communicating with TV
The problem is with your PS3 itself.
If it's still under warranty, take it back.
HDMI is available in several versions. The PS3 is compatible with HDMI version 1.3 or higher, which will take full advantage of Blu-ray Disc™ high-definition video. There are also "Type A" and "Type B" connectors. The PS3 uses the 19-pin Type A connector, which will allow resolutions up to 1080p.
The HDMI cable is not included with the PS3.
If you are using an adaptor (i.e., HDMI to DVI converter), try bypassing this adaptor and connecting the HDMI cable directly into the display.
Try connecting with the supplied AV Cable instead of the HDMI to see if you can get a successful installation. This will help determine where the problem may be with your particular HDMI setup and/or equipment.
Some older HDTVs may have issues with the copy protection protocols (HDCP) causing the handshake not being communicated between the TV and the PS3. Try resetting the TV by turning the TV and PS3 off, then unplug the TV power cord from the outlet and plug it back in. Then turn your TV and PS3 back on and see if the picture appears.

I have had the PS3 for a week now, with no problems. This morning I turned it on to find the Black screen issue. Thought it might be the cable, that didnt fix my problem, my CPU works fine with the excact same resution. RESET THE gfx SETTINGS BY HOLDING DOWN THE ON OFF BUTTON, Tried and upplgued both devices, then plugged them both in, no luck. My set was working before and is HDCP compliant, what the F$%@^%is going on, could it be this new software update I installed a few days ago?? Please help

This problem is ridiculous.
Why would the system work one day and the very next day nothing. I am about to throw this system out the window
You have saved our lives! I was ready to murder my child and throw the TV and PS3 out of the window. The PS3 worked fine on a componet cable then was moved to another TV with HDMI cable. After moving back to original TV we couldn't get anything to display. Heiny's initial solution worked perfectly when I persuaded my know it all son to try it!
when i try to use my PS3 on any other TV with AV or HDMI it doesnt work, i cant rollback to AV!!
It just worked on day and now NOTHING!!!! Im ready to explode, i tried no HDMI and regular cables and no. It just gives me a gray sceen with nothing

Kids were switching from one tv to another and when i went to go play i just hear sound of the PS3 powering up but no video i have tryied all the reseting on AV cables do i need to go get HDMI cables

My LG tv no longer communicates with my ps3. im trying to play movies and the home screen shows up asking if its a DVD i want to ply but nothing happens after that HELP.
I have the exact same problem with an LG tv. Prior to this I have had my LG tv replaced as that had the same problem. Does anyone else have the same problem as I think LG's just dont work with the ps3.
p.s I have tried everything!
I have the same problem when using a hdmi cable it was all working fine since tuesday and yesterday i used the ps3 and it woked fine. i went back an hour later and no signal. The trouble only comes with video, i am able to get sound through it. i have tried a hdmi cable that came with the x-box 360 that doesn't work. the problem only came when the update had been installed.
I have tried all the methods above and none of them work including reformating the ps3. im going to ring sony today and try to get on their teir 2 customer support.
I was thinking seeing as it worked on the previous update is there a way to install an older update or will the ps3 just automatically stop or update itself.
I have the same exact problem.
