PS3 no longer communicating with TV

I have been using my PS3 and Toshiba HDTV with a HDMI connection for about 6 months with no issue. Today I turn it on and the TV states no video input. I have tried a different HDMI cable and the original cables for the PS3 still nothing. I have connected a DVD player with the HDMI cable to my Toshiba, no problem. I have also tried the other HDMI inputs on my Toshiba and I only get audio no video. I have moved the PS3 to my TV upstairs and connected it, it works fine. Any other suggestions? The communicatoin between the two products seems to have stopped.

You have saved our lives! I was ready to murder my child and throw the TV and PS3 out of the window. The PS3 worked fine on a componet cable then was moved to another TV with HDMI cable. After moving back to original TV we couldn't get anything to display. Heiny's initial solution worked perfectly when I persuaded my know it all son to try it!

My LG tv no longer communicates with my ps3. im trying to play movies and the home screen shows up asking if its a DVD i want to ply but nothing happens after that HELP.

  • daviesj Apr 09, 2009

I have the exact same problem with an LG tv. Prior to this I have had my LG tv replaced as that had the same problem. Does anyone else have the same problem as I think LG's just dont work with the ps3.

    p.s I have tried everything!

  • devilrunner Apr 10, 2009

I have the same problem when using a hdmi cable it was all working fine since tuesday and yesterday i used the ps3 and it woked fine. i went back an hour later and no signal. The trouble only comes with video, i am able to get sound through it. i have tried a hdmi cable that came with the x-box 360 that doesn't work. the problem only came when the update had been installed.

I have tried all the methods above and none of them work including reformating the ps3. im going to ring sony today and try to get on their teir 2 customer support.

I was thinking seeing as it worked on the previous update is there a way to install an older update or will the ps3 just automatically stop or update itself.

All: Try this -

P
erform the following steps to reset the Video Output Settings.

  1. Make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the [HDMI OUT] port on the back of the PLAYSTATION 3 system. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the [HDMI Input] port of the TV or display monitor.
  2. While the PLAYSTATION 3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the touch-sensitive On/Off button on the front of the system until the system goes into standby mode again . (So the light cycle would go from: red light to --> green light --> then back to red light) This will ensure that you have held down the On/Off button long enough to reset the Video Output Settings.
  3. Turn ON the PLAYSTATION 3 and once the system finishes powering up, the Video Output Settings will automatically reset to the standard resolution (or detect the current display output settings of your TV/monitor). [If resetting does not auto-detect your HDTV, see next step below.]
NOTE: As of system software update version 1.60, the PLAYSTATION 3can automatically detect an HDMI connection to a TV. If the PLAYSTATION 3 is turned on with an HDMI cable connected, the screen for switching video output settings will be displayed automatically. (Does not function unless the TV that is connected by the HDMI cable is turned on.)

As of version 1.80 of the system update for the PLAYSTATION 3, the PLAYSTATION 3 can upscale the video content of PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and DVDs to HD resolution.

If Resetting the Video Output Setting Did NOT Detect Your HDTV Automatically (Certain TV's Only)
With certain televisions, the PLAYSTATION 3 may not automatically detect the HDMI source (TV) which it is plugged into, even after resetting the Video Output Setting (as described above).

If resetting the Video Output Setting did not work, you may need to follow these steps to manually locate the HDMI source:

1. Connect both the AV Cable and the HDMI cable from the PLAYSTATION 3 to the corresponding (AV and HDMI) ports on your TV. 2. Proceed with resetting the Video Output Setting on the PLAYSTATION 3 again. (Follow these steps, then continue to step 3 below.)
3. Turn the TV channel to the corresponding "Input" or "Video" channel for the AV Cable connection.
4. Manually change the Video Output Settings to HDMI. (Follow these steps, then continue to step 5 below.)
5. Now switch the "Input" or "Video" channel on the TV for the HDMI port the PLAYSTATION 3 is currently plugged into.
6. Accept the display settings for HDMI before the timer runs out (30 seconds). Highlight "Yes" and press the X button.
7. You can now disconnect AV Cable from the PLAYSTATION 3 and the TV, as it is no longer needed.

6. Accept the display settings for HDMI before the timer runs out (30 seconds). Highlight "Yes" and press the X button.
7. You can now disconnect AV Cable from the PLAYSTATION 3 and the TV, as it is no longer needed.

One more thing to keep in mind is that on some TV'S (such as the Phillips HDTV) you may have to turn the TV off and the on again as once the HDMI link is lost from a device, as long as the set is still on, nothing else will work, except to re initiate the HDMI source input.

SOLUTION #7 Worked for me. I have a Sony Bravia TV. Unplugged it for a couple of minutes, turned on PS3 and, Voila! I don't know why...I suppose it resets the HDMI input on the TV or something. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion!! I was about to pay someone to fix the PS3.

What worked for me was from a red light position holding the power switch down continuously until the red turned green and then red again and releasing. Then, turning it on normally and it showed the HD settings on the screen! Yippee. Thanks poster who described this solution.

The problem is with your PS3 itself.

How to connect sony ps3 to toshiba 32av500a

Use any HDMI cable to to this.

Connect cable to the "HDMI" port on the back of the PS3. Connect the other side of the HDMI cable to the "HDMI" port on the Toshiba TV. If the Toshiba TV has multiple HDMI ports, make note of which port you plugged the HDMI cable into.
Change the Toshiba TV to its "HDMI" video display mode. Press the "Power" button on the PS3 to turn the console on. The PS3 will automatically detect the HDMI cable. Select "Yes" to use the audio and video from the HDMI cable. Select "Yes" to have the PS3 automatically use the optimal settings for the Toshiba TV. Select "Yes" to accept the recommended resolution. Press the "X" button to save the settings

Turn on ps3 i get no picture or sound then i cant turn it off i have to unplug it whats wrong with it?

  • Check your HDMI Cable

HDMI is available in several versions. The PS3 is compatible with HDMI version 1.3 or higher, which will take full advantage of Blu-ray Disc™ high-definition video. There are also "Type A" and "Type B" connectors. The PS3 uses the 19-pin Type A connector, which will allow resolutions up to 1080p.
The HDMI cable is not included with the PS3.

  • Cable adaptors (i.e., HDMI to DVI converters)

If you are using an adaptor (i.e., HDMI to DVI converter), try bypassing this adaptor and connecting the HDMI cable directly into the display.

  • Check the adaptorTry an alternate cable

  • Try connecting with the supplied AV Cable instead of the HDMI to see if you can get a successful installation. This will help determine where the problem may be with your particular HDMI setup and/or equipment.

  • Some older HDTVs may have issues with the copy protection protocols (HDCP) causing the handshake not being communicated between the TV and the PS3. Try resetting the TV by turning the TV and PS3 off, then unplug the TV power cord from the outlet and plug it back in. Then turn your TV and PS3 back on and see if the picture appears.

  • Try using a different the HDMI Cable on the PS3.Make sure the HDMI Cable is free of any cuts, frays or other visible damage.
  • Try installing the PS3 to another TV or display (i.e., monitor).
  • Try using the HDMI Cable with a different PS3 system.

HDMI ports are not working

Try using the cables that were included with your PS3, (yellow, red, white) when you see your PS3 on that input. Plug in the HDMI cable. There should be something saying that an HDMI is detected and if you want to use it. Check the HDMI input on the TV and see if you see anything. The other thing that you might want to do is do a firmware update on the PS3. sometimes there are compatibility issues with HDMI

Surround sound for ps3 with a hdmi cable..

you need a HDMI connection for your stereo. HDMI is an all in one cable so if you don't get your sound in/out you need to hook up to just the RCA's, if you get a reciver that has an HDMI input you will solve this. then you go HDMI to Reciver then HDMI to TV

Toshiba 32AV500U HDMI issues

The Toshiba 32AV500U cannot display 1080p. Hook up your PS3 to your computer monitor, provided that it can display 1080p, or some other TV that can, then change your Video Output settings under Settings> Display Settings and uncheck 1080p, which will allow the PS3 to display in 1080i. Once you do that, then hook up the Toshiba via HDMI and it will work with no problem.
