This is a SATA drive. SATA drives do not have a master/slave setting.
This is simpler than you think!
Install your SATA drive and reboot into the BIOS setup
Go to the Boot drive sequence window
Make any other drive the boot drive
At this point, you can select the SATA drive as the next boot drive, or set the sequence to "No other boot drives"

Re-bhoot .... SATA drive is now the D drive unless you change the drive letter in the disk manager

*done*

If you are using the drives in a fairly new computer, the drives have a setting called "cable select" If these are EIDE drives, then they have jumpers on a set of pins on the power side of the drive. Look on the drive and use the power plug as a reference for how the jumper fits on the pins to make the drive "cable select" and what that means is the drive will conform to which cable is plugged into it. If you have the slave cable plugged into the drive, that is how the motherboard will recognize it.

My Seagate ST3200822AS 200 GB Hard Drive appears to only have 13.6 GB of disk space

When you look at the hard drive make certain you can see all the files including Hidden files. I suspect you might have either back up files on it, or system files.
To show the files to do this (In Windows 7) by opening windows Explorer and going to where it says "organise" and clicking on it then selecting "folder and Search options".
Click view, then select "show hidden files, folders and drives.
PLUS
Deselect by clicking it - "Hide protected operating system files"
Windows will warn you but click apply.
Next when you look at that drive all files will be shown.
You can then select and delete the files you want to get rid of.
REMEMBER to return the two above options to there correct settings when you have done or you could delete files on the rest of you system you need.
Alternatively.....
It should be possible to wipe all these hidden files, by doing a reformat of the drive.

My Barracuda 7200.7 200GB drive failed. The computer does not recognize that the drive is attached. I can hear it power up but then nothing. No clicking or other noise indicating that the heads are moving....

Try connecting it to another sata port on ypu motherboard or try using another sata cable. If still same problem go to the BIOS if that drive is detected properly. You should see there the model number and the capacity, if its not there then the hard drive has a problem, have it replaced.

I have a Seagate ST3200822AS 200 GB Hard Drive(windows XP).I want to use this as external but I don't want it to mix with HD on new computer(windows 7). How do I keep them separate and run one or the other...

Is the Seagate ST3200822AS an External Drive ( like USB connectivity ) or actual Hard Drive ? Even if it is Internal Hard Drive, You can make connect it to Win 7 and still keep it as Seperate Drive.

Connect the Hard Drive to Win 7 PC and Make it Slave ( partition ) by changing the Jumper on the Hard Drive ( jumper is a small pin or a lock that makes a Hard Drive Primary or Slave.

Once you connect the HD to Win 7, you will find new Drives Created in Win 7, this way you will differentiate between the Win 7 Drives and XP Drives

This link will how you the jumper position : Remove the jumper from slot 1 and put it in slot 2

How to format IDE hard drive?

This drive is an IDE drive. The jumpers can be set on it to make it a slave.
0794160.png
Once set as a slave, you can identify the drive letter given to this drive and format it either at a command prompt: C:> format [drive:] /s (to make it bootable) or no /s to just format it.- OR within Windows: right click on the drive letter and select format.

Seek rate problem in Seagate 200 GB

Hey, I recommend you test the harddrive with seagates own tools.

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

I recommend the dos version.

Also try active smart
http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/index.html

I would recommend backing up all the data from the drive, and then if the drive still has problems You should send it for warranty repairs. Shouldnt cost a thing.

You can also take it to a local pc repair shop to get all the data copyed and then sent to warranty service if nessasary it will cost thought if you do it via a shop.
