Scan a BLANK sheet of paper.
if you have that black strip it means there sre two possibilities:
>> the scanner glass is not screen
OR
>> the scanner is faulty.

Clean the glass properly using a moist lint free cloth.(do not use alcohol)
if the issue still persists

The only option that you have is to get the printer replaced.
If your printer is still under warranty(i.e if its still not an year old) you can get a free replacement from HP.
wherein they will send you a new printer absolutely FREE OF COST
if its not in warranty then you can opt for the UPGRADE option that HP has.
You can send them this faulty printer and get a LATEST PRINTER at a huge discount..

Why are pages scanning with lines running through them, but printing perfectly fine?

Try cleaning the rollers. Usually you have to remove the cartridge to get to the rollers that moves the paper.

HP OfficeJet J5780 Vertical Black Line Prints when copying or scaning only. Cleaned rollers and changed black ink cartrigde. Still problem.

Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.

HP DeskJet F4280 Scanning ends up in a black Image\document

It sounds like your settings are to save the image as a .pdf file instead of a .doc file. Check your settings carefully. (See this article for details.)
If that's not the problem, write back.

I can't scan an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet on one page-it creates two or three pictures. How do I get it to scan to one page?

Hi there. It sounds like you are not correctly setting up your page for scanning. Are you just putting the page in and hitting scan or are you going through the scan "wizard?" You need to let the scanner know what you are printing (color pic, black and white pic, text doc, etc.) and how big it is. Let me know what happens.

When I put a doc on the glass to copy -the print has a black vertical line down the page. When I print from computer to print - it works fine - there is no line of ink. Can I fix this myself? What would u...

A long black line on scanned images is usually caused by a piece of trash on the scanning mechanism.
Look at the scanning arm (the thing that moves when you scan something) and then see if it has any trash on it. If it looks good then you may have a mechanical malfunction in that part.
Let us know hat you find.

Black image

I have an HP 5470c flatbed scanner. It started with partially black scans, and progressed finally to completely black pages. Tried here for answers. Found none. So I opened up my scanner, figured I had nothing to lose. Thought it might be the ribbon cable attached to the moveable tray. Was RIGHT!! Immediately saw a small frayed piece where it was rubbing against the tray. Used some Scotch Long Lasting Tape to re-connect. EUREKA. Problem fixed!!

G85 printer making horizontal strips

Check the scanner cable and the status of the LED's in the scanning head. Unluckily, you printer is disposable, to HP that problem will mean to discard the entire printer and replace it for a new one if it's still under warranty.
