Hi
I have got a Whirlpool front loader washing machine. I am getting a "clean pump" red indicator light appearing and then I clean the filter and check that the pump rotor moves freely. Every time I have done this I have found no problems and it completes it's cycle with no problems. This clean pump problem does not happen all the time (roughly every 1 out of 4-7 washes). My wife reckons my work pass (3cm by 6cm, 1mm thick) is stuck somewhere in the machine and is causing the problem. Can you please help me. If my pass is stuck in the washing machine, can I get it out myself (can you please explain how I can get it out) or should I get a professional to get it out.
Thanks
Joe
This is from the Whirlpool user manual for the AWO\R 4205 - it tried it and it worked well, found a hair grip and some stones in mine!
We recommend that you check and clean the filter
regularly, at least two or three times a year.
Especially:
. If the appliance is not draining properly or if it fails to
perform spin cycles.
. If the pump is blocked by a foreign body (e.g. buttons,
coins or safety pins).
IMPORTANT: make sure the water has cooled
before draining the appliance.
1. Stop the appliance and unplug it.
2. Remove the plinth by using the separator of the
detergent dispenser (fig. .A.).
3. Place a container beneath it.
4. Open the filter but do not remove it completely.
Slowly turn the filter counterclockwise (fig. .B.) until
the water begins to drain out.
5. Wait until all the water has drained.
6. Now unscrew the filter completely and remove it.
7. Clean the filter and the filter chamber.
8. Check that the pump rotor moves freely.
9. Re-insert the filter and screw it in clockwise as far as it
will go.
10. Pour about 1 litre of water into the detergent drawer
to reactivate the .Eco system.. Check that the filter is
inserted properly and securely.
11. Reinstall the plinth.
12. Plug in the appliance again.
13. Select a programme and start it.
It works only when you use the litre of water to reset the pump electronics. Without doing this part it will persist.
Just did it and it worked for me.
Hope this helps.
OK, I posted before that the usual and then litre of water to reset. But after a couple of hours the clean pump light went back on.
So decided to open the unit up and now know what to do. Not any big job, I promise. Here is step by step:
1) Turn off the water valve going to the machine
2) Unplug it from the wall
3) Make sure you leave the water to cool down for a while if stil hot.
4) Once you are sure of above is done, move the machine to some where where you will be able to tip it forward to its front face down and the water can drain out without making your kitchen into a swamp!
5) Open the filter to let the water out
6) Now lay it onto the ground face down (maybe use old pilows to spare any possible damage under it)
7) When you look in the base, it will have a black rubber tube going from the base of the wash drum to the filter. It is held on by metal fixing clasps.
8) Take the one off at the drum by squeezing it with either your fingers or gently by a large pliers.
9) Once removed there will be a ping pong ball in the rubber tube, leave it and clear everything else.
10) Clear the hole from the drum of any blockage.
11) Check the tube to make sure it flows clear by pouring water through it and seeing if it runs out of filter (as it should still be open from earlier).
12) If not do the same clearance to the filter end of the rubber tube.
13) BE SURE AND REATTACH THIS RUBBER TUBE FIRMLY AND CAREFULLY. AS IF YOU DONT WATER WILL GO EVERYWHERE.
14) Put the machine up right back into position reattaching the water pipe (and turning water back on) and drain pipe.
15) Pour liter or so of water into the washing powder opening and plug in once you are sure all pipes are correctly back.
16) Now try it and it should be ok. If not you will need a technician.
worked a treat, THANK YOU!
Thank you.....I love this site!
Where do you enter the litre of water? Directly into the machine or where you put drawer where you put the detergent?
Had the same problem and found this site. Found a couple of small hairclips stuck at the back of a green water wheel. To ensure the least amount of water comes out, I tilted washing back. slowly turning the filter and tilting machine forward to control water coming out and into a container. with the machine tilted back I could see what was clogging the little fan wheel thingy. Have poured water into it and now all back to normal. Gotta go gotta get a mop!

The bottom kick panel pulls off. Follow the instructions above about removing the filter plug. Clean it out, put it back in and abracadbra it works! The light is off and the machine now finishes the cycle. Mine was full of dog hair, three australian 10 cent coins and a small scoobydoo figurine
Well after following all the solutions outlined on here, and I mean ALL of them, the light came on again.
Despite checking the pump for 'free movement a NUMBER of times" with no apparent issue, when I had put back in all the screws etc, re-plumbed, re started and watched the counter clock down UNTIL the machine was about drain- the light came on- in a rage I opened the filter to see if the machine would empty- whihc it duly did and then it went on a spin cycle. I just knew the issue was with the mechanism in the pump. I wiggled about a bit more (after turning off the power) and low and behold a bloody elastic band was wrapped about the motor in the pump.
I removed it. Voila- the machine was back!
Where did you find the elastic band? My machine does this too. Did you open the door at the bottom of the front on the right, and empty the water there, then check for fluff, blockages etc? Is that where the elastic band was? Thanks.
Thanks for your help!!
That was easy and I found my wife's ring

There is a access panel on the lower right front that will help you get to the pump just unscrew it and clean out the filter i will warn you if it is full of water your going to want to have a lot of towels to pick up the water
I have a whirpool washing machine and the red light keeps coming on for clean pump but i cant find the pump it is not on the front of the washing machine
How can I clean pump?
Got same problem, but every wash now. Inlet and outlet to pump clear. No loose wires to pump, and pump turning freely.
Suspect programme is sending a signal to pump to start, and somehow pump not responding, leaving the drum full of water and after a time frame set by programme, drum still full of water and CLEAN pump light displaying, as it thinks pump clogged when it isn`t.
Was thinking of attaching a meter to pump wiring, and looking to see if pump energised at the end of a wash. This would suggest?? programmer working at least?
Know very little about washing machines, but have deduced this from logic, albeit possibly flawed.
Solution #3 !!! Quick tip ... When re-attaching the tube (step 13) pull the clip back down the pipe, attach the hose then bring the clip back up to fasten tightly.
Check the height of the waste tube. The apex of the waste pipe should be about 10cm above the height of the washing machine. If not there is either too much or too little water pressure at the waste pump, and it won't empty. this is a really stupid design that may mean (as it did in my case) that you have to rearrange plumming for the waste pipe. I had the same issue with a brand new model, and this fixed it.
Great , got it sorted
I found the problem to be a small container on the front of the drum with a black hose coming from it, held in by two small trox screw full of detergent not allowing water out of it which was telling the machine had not emptied the waste water. bit of a pain to get to. need to pull out machine to removed lid and front panel
Had the same problem. Solution from "Irish_Wolf" helped. I found small sock by the Pink Pong Ball.....
Re Solution #3 - Irish Wolf - steps 1-16 are spot on. Outlet was clogged with coins + Luke Skywalker action figure. Irish Wolf, you are a genius.
The hard part is getting the tube back on and secure. Solution #10 Lexfrost is sound advice. I found you really need the pliers or wrench.
I followed all the steps that Adund listed above and it worked the first time!!! I put a long baking tray under the washing machine to catch all the water. I'm so happy it worked, my hubby is on a business trip for a week and I didn't think that I could fix this problem on my own. I need to wash my kid's school clothes every other day so I'm really chuffed that this advice worked and wasn't too difficult to follow. I thought I was going to have to buy extra uniform clothes. Thank you for this great site :)
I have a WFS1273AW and had a strange clacking sound and the clean pump red light. Thank you for your help and hints. Simply I removed the kickplate at the bottom at the front by pulling on the top (two lugs at the bottom). Unscrewed the black filter cover, water everywhere, pull out the filter, and cleaned out from the feeder pipe. $7.40 in change, the wire from an underwire bra and a bobby pin. Clean the filter, slot back in and re-tighten. I gave it a diluted bleach solution wash to clean out the **** and residue and it is perfect. Took all of two minutes. Did not tip the machine over or remove the inlet hose. Too easy and no service call expense. Thanks again for the guidance.
Read through several sites and after careful deliberation and consideration, tipped my machine upside down, removed the rubber pipe that connects the pump filter to the wash bowl and retrieved 5 rusty bobby pins, 2 rusty screws, 2 rusty nails, a length of fishing line, 2 rusty fifty cent pieces, a glob of stinking, slimy hair, 3 hair ties and I kid you not...a ping pong ball! Fair dinkum! Washing machine working beautifully again yay! Thankyou google =)

Hi, just wanted to mention that the ping pong ball is meant to stay in the filter -- it's actually part of the washing machine. It's called an OKO ball and is part of the filter / sump system.

I had the "clean pump" light and followed the instructions. This is on a WFS1273BD model of Whirlpool. It took a while to empty the water through the pump discharge 'hatch' on the bottom right. And when I peered in with a torch there was a 5c (Australian) coin in a groove in which the pump runs. It was dirty enough that it must have taken some time to get there. Once removed, problem solved.
IT SAY ON THE PROGRAM LIST THIS COULD ALSO BE A FAULT WITH THE FILTER
I tried re-setting with water this worked for 1-2 washes then the same issue. Before going to the lengths of pulling the machine apart I decided to try and "clean" the filter by using a "dishwasher cleaner" this is just a bottle of acid that you can use in dishwashers to clean limescale.
These machines have practically the same parts so I figured I would give it a try... and SUCCESS!!! my machine is pumping down in less than 1 minute and haven't had any issues since.
Clean pump solution..Just scope out all the water removel the kick pannel first I did it with out this step & then flip the machine face down, lid to the floor with an old pillow if you have one. Take the black rubber hose off ( plastic container under hose to catch any extra water) with a pair of pliers normally found in the car tool kit & remove the coins & bobby pins & put it back together after putting ur finger up the pump hole to see if there is any thing else up there. If you need to dismantle the pump there are 3 special screws holding it together if your dont have the right tool be inventive with the pliers. prime it with a liter of water. God luck
My Whirlpool washing machine has just done the same clean pump light coming on I think I have a paper lost in the the works I will try Irish wolf solution sounds good
Where is the pump?
I have a whirlpool washer and the clean pump sign came on we drained it there was nothing in the filter and we even replaced the pump and still when it gets to the drain part of the cycle nothing. My washer is less than a year old and it seems to be a common problem watchdog should go in and sort them out

I also have a Whirlpool front loader.
Same happens to us, clean pump light  comes on, and I clean it, but nothing is wrong, it is not clogged at all.  Very strange.

We also have a Whirlpool 6th sense, and the ` clean pump' light comes on about every 10 washes, I take the pump out, and it is hardly dirty at all. Only very slight deposits. So a bit strange, and a nuisance.

I have the same problem. The Clean pump light comes on and I've unplugged and drained and reset and it has happened again. Washing machine not even 6 months Old. Have followed instructions for pump clean to a T and no success. Should still be under warranty so don't want to pull it apart but worried that if something stuck that whirlpool will charge me a bomb for the service call although it sounds like a common problem.

please can some one tell me where the pump is??!! i have read the manual and it just tells you how to find an clean the filter i have done that but the light has come back on please can you tell me where to locate the pump so i can clean it please thanks for your help
If you have a problem with the "clean pump" light coming on with each drain cycle then I have discovered why this happens
This has little to do with the water pump but is due to the water level sensor not working properly !
This itself is due to a build-up of watery **** between the outer drum and the water level sensor - this build-up of **** tricks the sensor into believing that there is still water in the drum when it is empty.
The water pump keeps trying to empty out water when there is none ! The control then thinks that there is blockage and tells you to clean the pump !
The remedy is simple and costs nothing !
All you need is a pair of pliers and a small bottle brush with a wire handle.
1/ Turn the machine upside down
2/ Use the pliers to remove the spring circlip that holds the large outlet hose to the outer drum
3/ Pull off the large hose
4/ Insert the small bottle brush between the inner and outer drum and thoroughly clean the area toward the electrical contacts that you can see on the outside of the drum
5/ Re-fit the hose to the drum - do not forget to put the float back in !
6/ Make some tea and watch your washing machine working as it should !
Good luck

I have the same problem, clean filter but says pump needs cleaning, although mine does as it does not drain proper, leaving clothes soaked? Take it I have to open it up in order to inspect the pump.
Thanks for this. It has saved me the cost of a service visit. Worked first time
The 'adding' the litre of water did the trick. And there we were thinking we would have to buy a new machine [this one is 8 years old] My wife thinks I am a Hero :)
Its a Whirlpool AWO/D4505
