There is a place on the frame and a place on the kickstand for each end of the spring to connect to. With the bike on the kickstand and someone to help steady the bike, use a pair of side cut pliers or a very strong spring hook to pull the spring and rconnect it to the kickstand.

If you can't get it this way, remove the pivot bolt, connect both ends in their proper positions and work the kickstand back into position so the pivot bolt will go back in.

It's tough but it can be done.

I have a 2008 sportster which I bought used. The kickstand spring was missing. I bought a new one from the HD dealer and installed the spring but the kickstand still will not retract all the way and...

If the bike has been dropped, the stand could easilly be slightly bent.
Put the bike on a paddock stand and take a closer look. It will become obvious as soon as you can get underneath with the stand.
Ride safe.
Nice bike!

The spring came off of the kick stand. how do I get it back on?

This is a question I've seen a lot of times. These springs are not easy to get back on. The way I do it is with brute force. Hook the frame end of the spring onto the frame where it goes. Then I use a large pair of wire cutters, ****, side cutting pliers or whatever you call them to grab the spring and pull like heck to get it back on. The reason for using the wire cutting pliers? You aren't going to cut the spring, it's too tough for that but they won't slip off and hit you in the mouth either. Since I haven't worked on a Sportster for quite a while (I mostly work on Big Twins), there may be a way for you to take the kickstand off, connect the spring at both ends, and then lever the kickstand back into position. You might be able to do this if you keep the kickstand in it's "out" position. Good Luck!!

Kickstand spring popped off, kickstand is now loose and biks will not start even with kickstand down. problem is on a 2003 kawasaki 1600 vulcan classic

The kickstand has some kind of safety switch, if the spring is not broke you should be able to snap it back on (with the kickstand up) and have someone to hold the bike or put it on a lift. It might take some muscle or take it to a dealer and I'm sure they can pop it back on. Hope this helps.

Kickstand spring came off i need a diagram

Take the bolt off holding the kick stand on. Then put the spring on. Now you have the needed leverage to once again line up the kick stand back into position to put the bolt back in.
