Let me ask you this: Did OS-you didn't say which one- recognize Your HD when you try to install it?If HD is installed properly - then problem is that OS has no drivers for it. Meaning- try another OS.More data would be helpful.

Install new HD, plug into wall, no lights come on.

Are you sure the HD was installed correctly? The pins not mating properly might be the cause of the problem.

Make sure the power supply is working. Look at the brick (the box on the cord), it may have a light (an LED).

Hard Drive Prevents any other windows device from loading

Hi, Mark Here.
Yes the setup on the xp install puts drivers into memory, but being an older version of windows B4 sta was out it does not have drivers to support it.

You could go to Microsoft & search for a new version of setup install drivers that includes sta, & download to thumb.
Really typical Windows Failure (driver not available freeze up or blue screen).

How to Install a new HD on Dell Inspiron 6000?

You can always parition the drive, and install both Ubuntu and XP (dual boot).

Yes, you will be able to access the files (providing the drive isn't totally crashed), although Ubuntu may not "know" what the files are.

Blue iMac

It sounds like there's underlying problems unrelated to Panther. If the computer boots from the the old HD, but then the HD didn't show under Disk Utility, this is an intermittent problem. Try replacing the cable that goes to the HD (if there is one), it may have become damaged sufficiently that things aren't working under "heavy use" (like trying to install an OS). If there is no cable, or replacing it doesn't work, I'd suggest putting the original HD in and selling the computer as-is. Again, if it still botos from the old HD, then it's not a problem with the HD or Panther, unless the reconditioned HD you bought was faulty (unlikely but possible). More likely is when you installed the reconditioned HD, something else changes (e.g. connection made better contact) that caused the HD to show.
