Craftsman Weed Eater only runs on choke (not at all now!)

I've got the Craftsman convertible (2003 25cc, 358.795501).
I've been having problems for a couple months. It will start after about 20 pulls and then only run for a few seconds at high RPM. It takes doing this 2 or 3 times before it will stay running – and then only on choke at max throttle. It's progressively gotten worse over these last few weeks until today when I couldn't get it to stay running more than those few seconds.
I've changed the fuel, cleaned the air filter, even tried taking it apart to see if something is loose – it does seem like something is loose. I can't take it apart enough to find anything that's serviceable (hex wrenches, screws, etc.) It is leaking a little oil.
Thanks! Rob Phx AZ

Check the mounting screws holding the carburettor and the plate behiend the carb, they often become loose, also the gaskets, they might need renewing. Your carb. could need cleaning and new diaphrams. stephen.

Go to sears.com then parts store then type in model no. You should find a parts breakdown hopefully that will help.

My Craftsman V20 battery powered weed-eater starts and stops after about 3 seconds. How can I fix this?

  • To fix a weed eater that won't start, check the fuel to ensure that you are using the correct gas-to-oil ratio for the weed eater. Then, you have to change the spark plug. After that, replace the fuel filter. Now, you need to review the starting process of the weed eater.
