Maybe an old computer with an older version of Windows can be found to use it if your old computer is no longer available. This is unfortunately not what you would prefer to hear. It sounds like all the old data might need to be typed into a different genealogy program.

SOURCE: lost cd drive - computer does not recognize any cd

If the cd drive is actually running, but you are not able to access the information on the cd, check to see that the drive appears in windows explorer.
If it does appear, make sure you are current with your optional hardware updates at windows update, then take a look in the Device manager, right click the name of your cd drive, be sure it is enabled, and use the built in troubleshooter to attempt to fix it. This will help you to determine if you are in need of an updated driver for your cd drive, or whether the drive itself has failed.
Here is a link to an excellent Driver update tutorial if that is the problem....http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial119.html
If you are current with drivers for your machine, and the Device manager shows the drive is working correctly, please report back with you OS and the particulars of any error messages you receive when inserting cds and attempting to read/play them. Thanks.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take a moment to kindly rate this post....thanks!

My Sony RCD-W100 is ten years old but can no longer record on today's blank CDs. Can Din Unlock allow use of today's crop of CD-R blanks?

The "Din Unlock" feature on the Sony RCD-W100 is designed to allow the recording of audio CDs from external analog sources. It is not directly related to the compatibility of the device with different types of CD-R blanks.
If your Sony RCD-W100 is not able to record on newer CD-R blanks, it could be due to a few reasons:
1. Incompatibility: The device may not be compatible with the specific type or brand of CD-R blanks you are using. Different CD-R blanks have varying quality standards, and older recording devices may have limitations in recognizing or writing to certain types of discs.
2. Firmware/Software Update: Older recording devices may not have firmware or software updates available to support newer CD-R formats. Check the Sony support website to see if any updates are available for your specific model.
3. Aging Laser: Over time, the laser in the recording device may deteriorate, making it less effective at recording on CD-R blanks. This is a common issue with aging optical drives.
To address these concerns, you can try the following steps:
1. Update Firmware/Software: Check the Sony support website for any available firmware or software updates for your model. Installing updates may improve the compatibility of the device with newer CD-R blanks.
2. Try Different CD-R Blanks: Experiment with different brands or types of CD-R blanks to see if the device recognizes and records on any of them. Higher-quality CD-R blanks may have better compatibility.
3. Clean or Service the Device: If the device has been in use for ten years, it may benefit from a thorough cleaning or servicing. Dust or debris on the laser lens can affect its performance. Consult the device's user manual or contact Sony support for guidance on cleaning or servicing the unit.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it may indicate that the recording device has limitations that prevent it from working with newer CD-R blanks. In such cases, you may need to consider upgrading to a newer recording device that supports the latest technologies and formats.

MY OLD COMPUTER WINDOWS XPS RUNS FTM VERSION 10 FINE. MY NEW PC HAS WINDOWS 7 WILL NOT PERMIT INSTALLATION IS THERE A WAY TO INSTALL VERSION 10 ON WINDOWS 7?

The short answer is yes, Family Tree Maker 2010 is fully compatible with Windows 7.
The Family Tree Maker team has been working with Windows 7 for several months-even prior to the release of Family Tree Maker 2010. Since the "Release to Manufacture" (RTM) version of Windows 7 was released last August, we have done additional testing in our labs as well as with alpha and beta customers with no indication of incompatibility. Family Tree Maker 2008 and 2009 are also compatible with Windows 7.
As a point of interest, it may be helpful for people to know that we continually test Family Tree Maker with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
If you find a problem while running Family Tree Maker on your operating system, the best course of action is to contact customer support which can usually help you identify and solve the problem.

What drivers do I need to make Family tree maker Compatible with Windows 7

Start the Windows "Program Compatibility Wizard".
Tell it that you want to install a Windows XP application from CD-ROM.
Windows 7 will create a "wrapper" around the software, to make it think that it is running under Windows XP.
