How do you replace brushes in a dewalt 18 volt drill?

Brushes over time will wear down so comparing from the old to new will not look the same. If 18V brushes fit into the your drill then it should be fine.

if it smells, like a burning then the motor is burnt and needs to be replaced.

The brush holders are located at the back end of the motor. Depending on which model you have, you may have to only remove the end cap at the back of the motor to get access to the brush/holder set. Or you may have to split the entire clamshell to get at them. Be careful if you have to remove the transmission, there are a lot of small parts that can fall out and they all have to go back in correctly to make it work.

Just buy a new Makita 18volt.

first make sure brushes are not worn out and if not then replace the switch. the brake is contained in it to throw a short thru the motor when trigger released to stop drill. You can find a breakdown for this tool at Dewaltservicenet.com

the brush assembly slides out of the back of the motor. I suggest going to Dewaltservicenet.com and downloading a breakdown for this tool before starting. I don't think that the brushes are going to be your only problem though.

It is not the chuck that is stuck, it is probably the armature. Probably a problem with the brushes. Since it is so easy I would try first unscrewing the caps and pulling the brushes out to see if things spin then. If the brush will not come out then it is probably jambed and you would have to take the drill apart. If you take the brushes out and still have a problem, at least one reasonable but simply checked problem is eliminated.

Replacing the brushes would be the first step. You can find them on E-Bay and is easy to replace.
