SOURCE: my standby generator is just cranking but wont turn all the way
If it was installed only five months ago, it should still be under warranty. Call Home Depot and have them send out a repair person.

SOURCE: generac portable generator over voltage even with new control board and regulator
is engine running at 3600 to 3700 rpm at full load. most small engines run at this speed.you can buy a small tach on ebay TINY TACH.. you have to know what the engine speed is
There are two reasons that we see this shut down code appear.. especially during extreme cold weather conditions. The two reasons are worn or broken slip ring brushes or frost build up on the slip rings. Both cases prevent the generating portion of the generator from transferring voltage. If this occurs only during cold weather, I would switch the generator to off and press 'enter' (this will clear the shutdown code) then switch the generator to manual and attempt to start (may have to clear code once or twice more). If the generator starts and runs without shutdown then you can switch back to off and then to auto. If it starts and runs ok then this signifies that the slip rings were frosted over and once cleared will run normally. If the unit continues to shut down on undervolatge, a generac tech will have to be contacted to test the brush resistance and possibly replace. If the issue is slip rings frosting over during cold weather producing undervoltage issues, I would recommend a Generac cold weather kit (part#6212) to assist in preventing this issue from reoccurring. the cold weather kit consist of a battery pad heater and a heated oil filter wrap to maintain temperature in the crankcase.
