SOURCE: my drive shaft broke inside the transmission! no room to extract
Someone used to make a tool for that but I can't remember who...You might be able to get it out by making a loop on the end of a piece of stiff wire (coathanger?) and using a snare loop using stainless tie wire. put the tie wire through the loop in the stiff wire...guide the loop of tie wire around the stub of the axle, pull the stainless wire tight and pull on it.
SOURCE: Porsche 944 drive shaft torx key bolts
I ran into a similar problem when working on the bolts that hold the 4 piston calipers together on my BMW 2002Tii, that the Torx was too small and rounding off the inside edges of the bolt head. Being unable to find a bit that was between the x5 and next size up x0 torx, I decided to consult an expert. After going to the service department of my local dealership and talking to some of the older and more knowledgeable guys, we determined that the easiest fix is to take a cheap torx bit and grind down the tip of it so the bit engages a little bit more, since the bit tapers towards the end this would give much more of a positive engagement. Worked great after 3 minutes on a belt sander.
SOURCE: cannot get agitator off shaft Hoover 550M washing machine
Had to cut agitator away leaving metal boss exposed will now use a puller to pull off drive shaft
SOURCE: Broken agitator
If the main shaft were broken, the entire agitator assembly would come out. Usually, there is a plastic adapter that goes from the shaft to the interior of the agitator and is splined to mate with the shaft. A bolt commonly holds the two together, but usually has an uncommon drive head. There may be a removable plastic cap that either unscrews or just pulls off. Hope this helps!
