Ok so you have removed the propeller from the leg so now you need to get a spanner to fit the nut then turn the engine clockwise to undo the pinion gear

SOURCE: 40 Hp Johnson outboard motors stalls out after a

May likely be one of two problems:

1. Fuel flow: Make sure fuel tank vent is open and not blocked while engine running. Check primer bulb is working and no air leaks along hose anywhere. Check function of fuel pump and ensure fuel is getting to the cylinders.

2. Overheating: Check engine isn't overheating and that water pump is operating properly while engine is running.

SOURCE: 1974 Johnson 70 hp outboard, quits on acceleration.

It sounds like your motor is starving for fuel. At an idle, you have adequate flow to keep the engine running. When you call for more fuel...you sputter and quit. Could be a clogged filter or trash in the line or in a jet. Yes you will have some air in the bulb, but not a great deal. You could be sucking air at a hose connection (loosing some prime)...try this, start the engine and slowly accererate, have someone pump the bulb as you accelerate, see if the engine works properly while doing this test.

What is the mix ratio for a Johnson outboard motor?

Any Johnson outboard motor built since 1964 requires a 50/1 fuel ratio. Motors built prior to that date require a 32/1 ratio, with the exception of a few fishing motors built prior to 1955 that use a 16/1 ratio.

What year is a johnson 4 hp outboard serial number b 7643180 model number bj4brccs

To get the year of Johnson and Evinrude outboards use the word "INTRODUCES". Each letter corresponds to "1234567890" respectfully. It's best to check with a model year reference book, but this motor's model number contains "CC" which would indicate it's a '88.

The starter will not engage to the flywheel on a 1990 Johnson 25 HP Outboard. The solenoid works but centrifical mechanism does not.

Try spraying some CRC Light lubricant on the spiral where the pinion gear slides up and down. Can you turn the gear so it will move up to the flywheel? If it turns and stays at the bottom, you will need a new pinion gear! Does the starter motor spin?
