Question about Frigidaire FEX831CS Top Load Stacked Washer/Dryer

Agitator starts at begining of cycle before washer is full

Hello good people, please help: The agitator of my stack washer starts turning at the start of any wash cycle while the tub is being filled, does this on fill-up for rinse too.

Known: (1) water fills the tub to the desired level, no problem stopping or starting that; (2) lid switch (open) stops the spin cycle, close starts again. However, I can open lid during the wash cycle and it does not stop the agitator movement - is this right?

So essentially I have to fill using an in-between place on the "delicates cycle", once full, then turn knob to a "wash cycle" before it starts on it's own with the lid up. Once it finishes washing, drains, starts to fill for rinse, the agitator starts to move again while the water is filling up...but there's not enough water yet... water does stop on it's own, but the agitator is moving all the time.

Answer: I bought a new $100 timer unit, problem was the same. As I started checking out other connections I noticed that inside the front panel of the washer, way up in the top back edge, some wires appeared mashed. Sure enough on closer inspection, the wires to the lid switch had been slammed against the washer side, right on a metal lip, by the basket during some off-balance cycle.

I simply fixed this and covered with e-tape, then duct taped the whole mess to the inside wall away from the metal lip so it wouldn't happen again. Everything works fine now.

Moral of the story: take time to check all connections and follow wires with a flashlight to ensure nothing has been injured... especially if you remember a big-time off balance event prior to problems.

Please be carful as running the agitator without enough water will overheat and kick out the motor, however it should be ok when it resets itself.
Yes, the machine should stop agitating when you lift the lid so this too is part of the problem.
After looking at the print I can only suggest that the cam contacts in the timer ( contacts 12 and 14) that start the motor are burned and stuck together.

Drum knock when spin cycle

Hello.
Noises are common when using a two-in-one washer and dryer, as clicking or whirring is part of the cleaning process during the transition to the next cleaning process. The GE Spacesaver washer and dryer combo uses a top-loading washer stacked beneath the front-loading dryer, and uses an agitator that makes noises throughout the spin cycle. Although whirring or clicking is normal, other noises or malfunction indicates a problem with the washer that requires minor troubleshooting. Professional repair is necessary if the washer continues to experience problems during the spin cycle, as there may be a problem with the washer's agitator.
1 Open the washer's door and check the balance of the load's clothes. Clothes that are unevenly distributed around the agitator cause excessive shaking and result in an imbalance during the spin cycle. Reduce the load's size by removing clothing if the washer's drum is overloaded.
2 Push "Start/Pause" to pause the spin cycle and turn the washer's cycle knob to the "Off" position. Turn the knob to "Spin Only" and press "Start/Pause" to reset the cycle.
3 Turn the wrench counterclockwise or clockwise around the unit's legs to adjust the appliance's balance. The legs are adjustable with the help of a wrench to ensure the unit does not shake while in use. An unleveled unit shakes as it spins, and causes excessive squealing or rattling as it attempts to dry the clothes.
4 Touch "Start/Pause" on the front of the washer's control panel and unplug the washer/dryer unit's power cord from the electric oultlet. Wait two minutes and plug the power cord back into the electric outlet. Push "Start/Pause" to resume the spin cycle.
Thanks.

Washer keeps spinning. doesn't move to next cycle

Hi,
It sounds like the agitator , air bell or transmission is failing. Since the unit spins the belt & motor is ok. I recommend removing & inspecting the agitator & air bell. If they are not stripped out then you have a transmission failure.
Or, start the washer at the beginning of a cycle set to the lowest water level. After the unit fills it should be agitating stop the washer. Open the lid & try moving the agitator, if the agitator will not move it is good & no need to remove for inspection. You have a bad transmission. If the agitator moves easily then we know that the agitator or air bell is stripped out & will need to be inspected for confirmation before replacing.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Agitator always moving

The inner tub on some machines does rotate very slowly while filling to assist with the even distibution of the load. If the agitator is turning back & forth while in fill mode, you could have a timer or transmission problem. You need a tech.
