SOURCE: portable generator low voltage

85 volts represents residual voltage. It is possible that your unit sat for an extended period and lost it's magnetism or the excitation system failed under load. check your manual for a procedure to "flash the field". If that is not successful, e-mail me and I'll tell you how to trouble shoot the failure.

The speed will change the 'frequency' too. You need to make sure you still have 60 Hz. You may have need a voltage regulator adjustment, not a speed adjustment.

First locate the oil pressure switch and see if you can bypass it,then see if it runs. If not check the fuel filter and fuel pump, make sure solonoid for fuel pump is kicking on.

SOURCE: Honda ems 4000 generator starts and runs great, but no power

At the controller, you need to see if it is actually sending electricity out of the Generator/Alternator, have a look where the leads from the power making unit mates, (Think of it as a motor in reverse) onto the board. There should be an AC Voltage there, then, work back, or out from there, trace the Voltage until it stops, thats the problem... Check the Breaker isn't tripped or faulty too.

I own a northstar pro 80000 generator. I recently had to replace both capacitors. Now reading 145 and 148 volts per side. Any adjustments available to reduce? Thank you in advance, Mark

The RPM lowered should lower voltage, try it by hand, plug in the volt meter and push the throttle on top of carb with your finger ,should not take much .

Onan generator

Hello, I would check the valve clearance. If the valve clearance is too small, the valves can expand in length as the engine comes up to running temperature and lose compression in the cylinder until the engine cools back down and the process starts all over again

Have a 4000 watt sportsman generator that will not produce electric i have replaced the avr what next

Could be lost exciter current. This is how to restore it - Connect 16 or 18 gauge wires to a 12 volt battery. With generator running, insert bare ends of wires into AC outlet - one to Hot, the other to Neutral. Insert and remove quickly. There should be a flash and power will be restored. If not, repeat until you get that flash and output current restored. Using light gauge wires is so that if you are too slow to remove them once AC is restored. they will burn out before the battery suffers from the AC incoming. Be quick and be careful.

My portable generator runs great but only produces 7 volts and 20 volts on each 110 volt receptacle and 20 volts on the 220 volt receptacle. any ideas on troubleshooting steps to find the problem part?

Assuming the speed is correct check the voltage on the rotor brushes during running (Caution) It should be DC. If you have low or no DC voltage then the capacitor in the end of the generator housing is bad, or the AVR. If you do have voltage then make sure the slip rings are clean and shiny, from there you may have a rotor or stator issue that needs carefull resisitance check

Powerhorse 4000 generator only has 110v output

to get that voltage , it would have to be revving very high
volts on a gen set are set by engine rpms
start it again ad keep manual control of the governor lever and adjust the speed screw ( controls the spring tension to the gov lever) to the 240 v output
a straight ac gen set is a pure sine wave --it is the inverter sets that have a squared of sine wave

My just purchased/well used Coleman i/c 4000 generator puts out about 150 volts, no load, instead of 120v.The owners manual does not indicate how to adjust it; it says it is factory adjusted. It may have...

Probably running too fast. You can slow it down by adjusting a screw behind or near the carburetor. Monitor the voltage while doing this. The adjustment screw will be one which moves a lever with a spring attached to it.

here is a thread on it:

I need to look at carb as I believe it is running to fast as I have150 volts in a 110 outlet

There is a throttle plate on the top of the engine above the front engine cover that will have a screw facing you. Turn the screw Counter clockwise to reduce engine speed and voltage. (Adjustment is for EX27 Engine speed)

Unit shuts down from overspeed fault unit has 35 hours total run time never ran more than 2 hours 45 minutes rest is excerise time . is this problem with the 15 kw common ?

The engine throttle control is out of adjustment. It needs to be set based on the generator frequency
(60 Hz).
