Can't get weed eater started. Have an older weed eater brand. Fuel is getting to engine, but can't get it to start. How do I adjust the carb to get it to start. I have cleaned everything out and have the right gas/oil mix. thanks (Poulan weed eater gti 15t)

This is a common problem on older Poulan models. Press the primer button 10 times and pull the starter rope twice, then pull the spark plug and examine it. If the plug is wet that means gas is definitely getting to the combustion chamber. Next thing is to use a compression tester. If you do not have a compression tester but have an AutoZone anywhere near you, you can get a loaner from them. Screw the compression tester into the plug hole and pull the start rope 4 times. If the tester reads anything below 90psi, you have a bad ring and will have to take the motor apart to clean the piston and ring or replace the ring.

Keep me posted on what you find, ok? I can walk you through the procedure to replace the ring if necessary. Good Luck!

I have a ryobi ss26 weed eater and it starts and will be running fine but when you go to actually cut the weeds it will run for a couple of minutes and then it dies. I have taken the carb apart and gone...

Fuel demand rises when an engine is put to work and that is probably why it is dying - either the fuel system or the carb is incapable of supplying that extra fuel or in an extreme case the crank seals might be failing.

Assuming everything else is in good order and in the case of a carb with the customary two fuel screws it could be a matter of maladjustment. Correct adjustment is tricky and takes a deal of patience.
If partially applying the choke, strangler or cold start as it begins to die makes it recover somewhat, I suggest you take another look at the fuel system and then the carb adjustment.

Replaced carb on my ryobi weed eater still does the same thing starts but will not stay running

Most common problem with weed eaters is the small fuel line breaks off inside of fuel tank usually flush with top of fuel tank - check to see if fuel line is still connected to weighted fuel filter inside of tank - replace if necessary. If fuel line is intact then adjust High speed adjusting screw 1/16 counter clockwise to allow a richer mixture - special tool may be needed to adjust - available on ebay. Starting procedure

Terry: According to eHow.com:

"
  • Put on a pair of safety glasses. Remove the fuel cap from the Weed Eater and set it aside. Fill the fuel tank with unleaded gasoline that has been mixed with quality 2-stroke oil in a 40:1 ratio. Replace the fuel cap.
  • Move the Weed Eater to a safe place and lay it flat on the ground. Depress the fuel bulb located beneath the carburetor approximately six times to prime the engine. Press it slowly so that fuel has adequate time to traverse the fuel line.
  • Slide the handlebar-mounted engine "On/Stop" switch to the "On" position. Slide the choke lever beneath the fuel tank to the "Full" position.
  • Depress the "Throttle Lock" lever located beside the engine "On/Stop" switch. Keeping the lever depressed, squeeze the throttle trigger. Release the throttle lock. This sequence holds the trigger in the depressed position, which aids in starting the Weed Eater.
  • Roll the Weed Eater so that it is resting on the engine and the trimmer head shield only. This will allow the spinning trimmer head to avoid contact with the ground. Brace the Weed Eater by holding it to the ground with one hand. Using your other hand, pull the starter rope quickly until the engine begins to run. Do not pull the rope more than a dozen times. If it fails to start by then, squeeze the throttle trigger and continue to pull until the engine starts.
  • Allow the Weed Eater to warm up for about 15 seconds, then slide the choke lever to the "Off" position. Let the trimmer run for another minute without touching the throttle lever. After the Weed Eater has warmed up, squeeze the throttle trigger once to disengage the throttle lock. The trimmer is now operational.

When weed eater is running in order to get the head to turn i've got to give it full throttle before i can cut the grass, and it still bogs down.

do you have two adjustment screws down in a hole in the carb?
If you do they are the carb. high and low adjustment.
What I do is take a hacksaw and cut a groove right in the housing an the screw heads .that way you can adjust them Good luck

Weed eater shut down once I began to trim

Youwill need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner.Make sure the small screen is free of debris. (Should be able to seedaylight through it.)

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.
